Katy Perry, one of the best-selling female artists of all time, is set to take her star power to new heights by joining Blue Origin’s upcoming all-women spaceflight. Perry will be among a historic crew that includes Jeff Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sanchez, CBS host Gayle King, former Nasa rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
This will be the first all-female spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova’s ground-breaking solo mission in 1963. While Blue Origin hasn’t announced an exact launch date, the mission is scheduled for this spring.
Perry, who has over 115 billion streams, expressed her excitement about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I hope my journey inspires my daughter and others to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively,” she shared via Blue Origin.
“If you had told me that I would be part of the first ever all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child. Although we didn’t grow up with much, I never stopped looking at the world with hopeful WONDER! I work hard to live my life that way still, and I am motivated more than ever to be an example for my daughter that women should take up space (pun intended). That’s why this opportunity is so incredible — so that I can show all of the youngest & most vulnerable among us to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively. I am honored to be among this diverse group of celestial sisters,” Perry captioned the Instagram post she made to share the news with her fans.
Katty Perry fans had a field day reacting to the announcement. “She’s probably going to perform E.T. in space,” said one, while another commented, “Maybe the aliens will enjoy 143 because earthlings certainly didn’t.”
Another user wrote, “Their last rocket left astronauts in space, say bye to Katy Perry.”
Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket is built for suborbital travel, offering passengers a few minutes of weightlessness and stunning views of Earth from beyond the Kármán line—the recognised boundary of space. This flight will be the eleventh human mission in the company’s history, with past passengers including Star Trek legend William Shatner and former NFL star Michael Strahan.
