Friendship is hailed as life’s most rewarding connection, built on trust, shared memories, comfort, and unwavering support. While some friendships fade with time, others withstand the challenges and become timeless.
Much like Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York, and Samantha Jones in the popular show Sex and the City, four women from the United Kingdom––Marion Banforth, Susan Morris, Mary Helliwell, and Carol Asbro––travelled to a seaside resort in Torquay, Devon, England, in 1972. They were friends from school and 17 at the time.
Now, 50 years later, their friendship became an Internet sensation when the group recreated a cherished photo from that trip to celebrate their 70th birthdays. In 1972, they had sworn they would return to Devon when they turned 70.
The idea to recreate the photograph came from Susan Morris, BBC News reported. We were only kids and so excited about staying in a cramped caravan and sharing each other’s clothes. It felt really exotic and grown-up being on our own without parents in the English Riviera,” Morris, who now has five grandchildren, told The Telegraph & Argus.
In the now-viral picture, the women donned outfits closely resembling those in the original picture, but finding the exact location proved tricky. The white hotel visible in the 1972 image had since been demolished, leading to some confusion.

A few weeks after their return from Torquay, the group decided to submit the two photos along with a write-up by Ansbro’s husband to the Halifax Courier, a local newspaper in West Yorkshire. The story was published, and it quickly garnered attention on social media.
Reacting to the viral photo, a user wrote, “Such beautiful photos and beautiful ladies. so exciting that all four of you ladies were able to do this! BFF’s, such a beautiful thing!” Another user commented, “Still looking great ladies, fab shot.”
“This is beautiful,” a third user said.
