
A Boeing 767 cargo plane operated by FedEx Airlines smashed its nose into the runway at Istanbul Airport after its front landing gear failed. The incident took place on May 8.
The viral video shows the Boeing 767 landing using the back landing gear and smashing its nose with the front part of the fuselage. The video also captured sparks flying and smoke around the aircraft as it scraped along the runway.
Sharing the video on X, the handle @webflite wrote, “Earlier today (May 8th), the nose landing gear of a FedEx Boeing 767-3S2F freighter, built in 2014, failed to extend as the aircraft approached landing.”

Posted on May 8, the video accumulated over 3,03,000 views on the platform with social media users hailing the pilot for managing to land. Reacting to it, a user wrote, “Great control pilots.” Another user commented, “This is so much smoother than what I anticipated would happen. Great job pilots!”
“We have a problem with civilian aircraft maintenance,” a third user reacted.
According to Reuters, there were no casualties, and a probe has been launched. The FedEx Airlines Boeing 767, flying from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, informed the control tower in Istanbul about the landing gear failing to open.
“Flight traffic and operations remain unaffected on all other runways, including the auxiliary runways,” said the airport operator. Boeing 767 is nearly 10-year-old and is based on the 767 passenger model of the 1980s.
In a similar incident that happened in June 2023, a Boeing 717 flown by Delta Airlines landed without a nose gear in Charlotte, North Carolina.
