India’s maritime sector hit a milestone in FY 2024-25, with cargo handling at 12 major ports rising from 819 million tonnes in FY 2023-24 to 855 million tonnes—a 4.3 per cent annual growth, according to a PIB press release.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reports that the top five major ports alone accounted for 63.12 per cent of all cargo handled as of June 2025.

Odisha’s Paradip Port Authority (PPA) retained its position as India’s largest cargo handler, managing 13.14 million tonnes—18.04 per cent of the total—up from 12.96 million tonnes in June 2024.

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Gujarat secured second place with 12.03 million tonnes and a 16.51 per cent cargo share.

At the other end, Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) in Goa handled 3.4 million tonnes (2.3 per cent of total cargo).

Despite being the smallest by volume, MPA showed significant growth from 1.44 million tonnes in June 2024.

Other key ports include Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP Kolkata), with Tamil Nadu alone home to three major ports—Chennai, Kamarajar, and V O Chidambaranar.
