WhatsApp Android users will now be able back up their chats to Google Drive directly. An APK mirror of the WhatApp app with the feature had been leaked in April this year.
Google has officially made the announcement on its blogpost and said that Android users can now created “private backup of chat history, voice messages, photos, and videos in Google Drive.”
The advantage to this feature is that once you switch phones or your old phone dies unexpectedly, at least your WhatsApp chats will be saved.

Earlier the 2.12.45 APK had allowed users to try the Google Drive feature, although it was not available on the official WhatsApp site or Google Play Store. Once users update, in chat backup, they will see the Google Drive option. After you switch on Chat backup, the backup should start taking place automatically.
Google says it is rolling out the feature to Android app users over the coming months and they should keep an eye out for the update.
