STATS: Shubman Gill scores 5th Test century as India captain in just 7th game in charge; IND declare for 518/5

Shubman Gill scored his fifth Test century in just seven Tests as India captain after getting to the three-figure mark on Saturday in just 177 balls against West Indies at the New Delhi Test. Gill hit 14 boundaries and a six against the West Indies in the first innings of the second Test before the Indian team declared with the scoreboard reading 518/5.

Gill was batting unbeaten on 129 when he chose to end the Indian innings. The innings propped up his career average to 43.47 while his average as India captain rose to 84.81.

This is Gill’s 10th Test century overall for India. The 129 not out is Gill’s fifth best score in Tests, with his highest score being the 269 he scored against England in Birmingham. In fact, of his top five knocks in terms of runs, four have come in the last few months, with the top three coming against England away.

This has been one of Gill’s best years in the longest format of the game. In 2025, Gill has crossed 940 runs in 14 innings in Tests at an average of 72.3. He’s maintained a strike rate of 62.29 while scoring one half century as well.

“The last few months have been very exciting for me,” Gill had recently remarked. “I’m really looking forward to what the future has. I want to stay in the present and don’t really want to look back on what I’ve been able to achieve or what we as a team have been able to achieve. (I) just want to look forward and win everything that we have in the upcoming months.”

With Gill’s century, Indian team edged closer to the 500-run mark. Earlier, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal had been run out on 175 after a mix-up involving Gill, while Sai Sudharsan had chipped in with a fluent 87. India declared their first innings as soon as Dhruv Jurel fell for 44 while trying to push the strike rate.

India have already won the first Test of the two-Test series against West Indies at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium by an innings and 140 runs.
