India vs Australia, 2nd Test Day 1: Match highlights, as it happened in Bangalore

India all of for 189, Indian batting fails again, Lyon got 8/50. KL Rahul was the only Indian batsman who played well and scored 90 runs

Spinner Nathon Lyon decimated India to a paltry 189 on Day 1 of the second Test in Bangalore. KL Rahul was the only saving grace for India who fell short of his ton by just 10 runs. At stumps, Australia are 40/0 with David Warner and Matt Renshaw holding strong and trail by 149 runs.

India vs Australia score and updates: As it happened in Bangalore

4:32 pm: Alright. Ashwin to bowl the final over of the day. Just a single from the final over of the day and Australia close on 40/0. Defended solidly by Renshaw and Warner applauds his effort.

4:29 pm: Here’s Jadeja with one over on the day. Warner to face it from the start. Five runs from the over – two singles from either batsmen and then run three runs on the last ball

4:26 pm: Over two overs left to be bowled in Bangalore on the opening day. Ashwin getting good spin but not enough bounce or the vicious spin that Lyon got. Not causing problems for Warner and Renshaw

4:2o pm: Ashwin with a wicket-to-wicket ball and it stays low after hitting one of the cracks in the surface. Beats Renshaw and is kept by Saha. Could have easily taken out the stumps had it been on the stump and not narrowly outside off as was the case

4:14 pm: Umesh Yadav returns to replace Ishant Sharma and starts by beating the outside edge of Matt Renshaw.

4:11 pm: Ashwin trying to get the same effect that Lyon did from the pavillion end. But not getting as much bounce – the difference maker for the Australian spinner

3:59 pm: DROPPED! Ajinkya Rahane lets go of Renshaw at 9. Ishant Sharma with one outside the off stump, Renshaw has a drive at it and gets a thick outside edge which flies to Rahane and it is dropped. Kohli can’t help but smile in frustration at the events. 24 catches dropped this season – at least. Five reprieves for Smith in the last Test alone. Embarrassing numbers for the no.1  side in the world

3:55 pm: Huge appeal for leg before by Ashwin and the rest of the team. Have Renshaw struck on the pads not once but twice. Really good delivery and very close that. Discussions whether to go for the review but Saha suggests against it.

3:50 pm: Australia would enjoy batting in this situation. Not much time left in the day, and survival is something which would be on both Warner and Renshwar’s mind

3:44 pm: Off the Renshaw’s edge, and it races to the ropes. These runs hurt the fielding team, especially when they don’t have a decent total in the bank

3:41 pm: Change of angle and Ishant cramps Warner for room, beats his defence. Much better line by the seamer, and the ball straightening from that angle certainly helps against the left-hander

3:40 pm: Ishant should look to alter his line a bit. Attacking the stumps is not a bad option on this strip. We are already seeing signs of the strip behaving up and down

3:34 pm: Umesh Yadav introdcued from the other end and Warner greets him with a boundary. Room on offer and he gives it whack!

3:28 pm: Matt Renshaw, who was very impressive in the Pune Test, is the other opener. Ishant Sharma to commence proceedings for the hosts. With two left-handers in the middle, it’s a matter of time before Kohli turns to Ashwin

3:25 pm: Lyon’s 8/50 are the best ever figures for a bowler at this venue. The two teams are out in the middle for the Australian innings. David Warner scratches the popping crease and gets ready to take guard

3:18 pm: WICKET! It’s all over for India. Lyon takes just one delivery to get rid of Ishant Sharma and wrap the Indian innings. The offie returns with career-best figures of 8/50 as the hosts put up another disappointing show with the bat. Only positive from this innings – Rahul’s 90 at top of the order. Australia to resume their innings shortly. Stay tuned for all the action

3:16 pm: WICKET! Rash shot and Rahul throws it away. No.7 for Lyon as the Indian opener departs after scoring a solid 90. Turn, decent bounce and Rahul could only miscue it to Renshaw in the ring

Story continues below this ad

3:11 pm: Rahul sweeps, misses. Fielders go up but the finger doesn’t. Smith takes another review. Unsuccessful one and the right-hander survives

3:09 pm: Umesh Yadav is the new man in and with Lyon looking like picking a wicket every ball, it remains to be seen whether or not Rahul will reach three figures. He is still 11 short of ton

3:06 pm: WICKET! Bat too close to the pad, some activity on the snickometer. Third umpire convinced there was an inside-edge, turns down the LBW appeal but gives him out caught. No.6 for Lyon, Jadeja departs cheaply

3:05 pm: Loud appeal, Wade was very interested but umpire not interested. Smith goes for a review straight away. Nervous times for R Jadeja

3:04 pm: Nathan Lyon, with 55 wickets, becomes the leading wicket-taker for Australia against India in the longest format. The offie gets a thumbs up from former Aussie seamer Mitchell Johnson

https://twitter.com/MitchJohnson398/status/837957170318602240

3:00 pm: Mitchell Starc into the attack. He bowled well with the new ball and Smith is now looking to clean up the tail with his premier seamer. India 187/7

2:56 pm: Nathan Lyon continues to spin the ball fantastically well. Ball pitches on middle stump and spins plenty, with good bounce, to beat the batsman down the leg and backward short leg. Finds the gap and goes for four byes. This time Jadeja rocks on the backfoot and punches it away for a single.

https://twitter.com/fwildecricket/status/837958473769959424

2:55 pm: Jadeja with patient and defensive start to his inning. Bats out five deliveries without much concern as O’Keefe bowls a one-run over

Story continues below this ad

2:52 pm: Ravindra Jadeja is the new man in. It will be interesting to see how he bats in this innings

2:50 pm: WICKET! Top stuff from Lyon and Saha could only edge it to Snith at first slip. The offie picks his fifth wicket of the innings and takes his wickets tally against India to 55. This is quality bowling and poor application by the Indian batsmen

2:45 pm: Lyon, with figures of 4/44, has been the pick of the bowlers for Australia on the opening day of the second Test

2:39 pm: Wriddhiman Saha is the new man in, and India now need a special effort to survive the final session. There’s plenty of bounce to keep the bowlers interested. Meanwhile, KL Rahul moves to 84 – 16 short of his 5th Test hundred

Story continues below this ad

2:38 pm: WICKET! Lyon the man again. Not much turn but the extra bounce helps him get rid of Ashwin. The right-hander moved back and across and could only glove it to David Warner stationed at close-in catching position. No.4 for Lyon

2:36 pm: Turn, bounce and this Bangalore strip is turning out to be a turner, as early as Day 1 of the match. Another early finish on the cards?

2:30 pm: The players are out for the final session of the day’s play. Australia would now look to wrap the Indian innings without conceding too many runs. India on the other hand would hope for a Rahul session, and support from the tail-enders

2:13 pm: TEA! Australia have the upper hand at the end of the second session. Ball spinning plenty and Nathan Lyon has basked in it with three wickets and three pivotal wickets at that. Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Karun Nair all back in the hut. KL Rahul the only Indian batsman to provide resistance. India 168/5 at Tea.

2:04 pm: GONE! Turn from O’Keefe has done the trick and has engulfed Karun Nair in its wake. Nair comes off the crease but has no real thought behind what he was going to do. O’Keefe keeps it slower in the air and has more flight to it. Bounces in front of Nair and it beats the outside of the bat and Wade stumps him in a flash

2:00 pm: Starc goes for the yorker but bowls a full toss to Nair instead. Karun plays it late and places it past square leg

1:53 pm: Flow of runs has been slowed down. And that would be the wise thing to do given the circumstances. Karun Nair sweeps one from O’Keefe and it isn’t played down the ground. Takes the aerial route, shouts of catch but it is safe in the end

1:42 pm: FOUR! Mitchell Starc strays down the leg side and Karun Nair flicks it for a boundary down the leg side. Well placed and good reactions to that delivery

1:38 pm: KL Rahul, for the second time this series, is the only confident batsman in the Indian side. He’s looking good as he moves beyond 70 runs. Has Karun Nair for company – who scored 300 the last time he batted.

1:24 pm: GONE! Ajinkya Rahane is stumped by Matthew Wade with Nathan Lyon striking. Rahane comes down the track and misses the ball completely. Wade fails to collect properly but has enough time to gather the ball a second time and remove the bails. Rahane was way too down the track to come back.

1:21 pm: Gorgeous delivery by O’Keefe to beat the outside edge of KL Rahul. This one has turned viciously and bounced past Rahul’s defensive shot. Pitched outside the off stump and kept going away

1:18 pm: Full toss by O’Keefe and Rahane gives it the due treatment. Uses his wrist beautifully to it and finds the gap between mid-on and midwicket

1:08 pm: DROPPED! Maybe? KL Rahul with a paddle sweep and it goes quickly and flies to David Warner at leg slip. Gets his hands to it but can’t hold on and claim it till the end. And at the end of the over, drinks being taken.

1:07 pm: Maiden by O’Keefe and the pressure piling on by the spin duo from Australia as Nathan Lyon plies from the other end.

12:57 pm: FOUR! Ajinkya Rahane removes some pressure from himself as he comes down the track and smacks a boundary. Smith immediately removes a close in fielder breathing down Rahane’s neck

12:56 pm: Single brings up the 100 runs for India. Steers the ball into the leg side and a comfortable single has India over the mark

12:52 pm: FOUR! KL Rahul steers a delivery a touch outside the off stump for a four. Opens the blade a shade and sends the ball into the vacant first slip region. Fielder at second slip and Hazlewood both share a look in disappointment

12:47 pm: Ajinkya Rahane is the new man in for India. He has endured some pressure lately with his place being questioned but has found the support of Anil Kumble.

12:41 pm: Virat Kohli has now been dismissed five times by two bowlers – James Anderson and Nathan Lyon.

12:37 pm: In the second innings of the Pune Test, Kohli was out to a ball that he left alone and went on to hit the stumps. This time too, he offers nothing and pays for it. Abysmal from the best batsman in the current Indian setup.

12:31 pm: Nathan Lyon has Virat Kohli leg before and it is given by the umpire. Kohli consults Rahul and REVIEWS. GONE! Lyon hasn’t overstepped, the ball pitches on middle stump and it straightens a touch and it was going on to hit the leg stump. It pitched outside off, impact is in-line and going on hit middle and leg. Kohli was almost back into the pavillion before the final verdict came through. Rather absurd to even review that. Was nowhere near questionable.

12:29 pm: FOUR! Kohli gets to the pitch of the ball from Nathan Lyon. Plays it slightly on the turn and the ball runs away for a four. Really good stride forward to push that ball into the off side

12:24 pm: FIFTY! KL Rahul brings up his fifty from 105 balls. Steals a single and raises his bat. Been a battling effort at times. Eight boundaries for that milestone.

12:20 pm: Mitchell Starc to Virat Kohli. Kohli with a poor decision to go after a ball outside the off stump and it was rising. Angling away and Kohli tried to steer it over the slips cordon but gets nothing on it. Next ball, he gets to the pitch of the ball and plays it for a boundary.

12:10 pm: Kohli adjusts late to the final ball of the Nathan Lyon over. He gets an inside edge onto the pad. The ball stayed low and needed the Indian skipper to adjust late on

12:10 pm: We’re underway for the second session of play on the opening day in the second Test. Virat Kohli is the new man in and he joins KL Rahul in the middle

11:56 am: Australia have been very good in the first session. Bowling to line, good seam bowling attack and helped very well by the spin effort too. Praise for Starc who has been exceptional in varying his bowling in terms of line and length.

11:40 am: Expect the tempo, the belief and the desire to be different from India in the second session. KL Rahul will return with the RCB skipper Virat Kohli and the captain has made promises of no repeat of the performance in Pune. And for that, his bat needs to work too.

11:33 am: And that will be lunch! Australia go into the break with the momentum and will be upbeat as they unwind for a bit. Engrossing battle between bat and ball in the first session. It is not unplayable but there is something for the bowlers too. There is bounce, there is spin and there is bounce.

11:28 am: GONE! Cheteshwar Pujara gets the glove, hits the pad and is taken by Peter Handscomb at forward short leg. He goes for 17. Pujara moves forward and then back noticing the flatter delivery and ends up inside edging to the pad and then the fielder in the process. Not confident batting

11:26 am: Final over of the first session of play. Nathan Lyon to bowl it. Pujara to face the final few deliveries. Excellent bowling by the Aussie spinner. Really good release and getting lovely turn and bounce from the surface.

11:24 am: Starc with a wide smile as Cheteshwar Pujara lets go of a thumping bouncer that needs the Indian batsman to flex his neck muscles.

11:22 am: KL Rahul goes for a paddle sweep to Nathan Lyon and the ball lobs up towards the vacant leg slip region. Safely played then and a single taken. Noticing this, Lyon employs a leg slip to end the over

11:16 am: Low full toss outside off by Mitchell Starc and KL Rahul drives beautifully through the cover region for a four. Sweetly struck

11:12 am: PHEW! A ball after plenty of turn and bounce, the ball stays low and beats KL Rahul. It also beats Wade behind the stumps and goes for byes. Final delivery of the over also spins sharply as Rahul tries to play reverse sleep but only hits his elbow in the process

11:07 am: Once again, Starc has Rahul playing that leg stump line with the ball rising on to the Indian batsman. Tries to thwart it away but it only carries to the fielder on the bounce. Two balls later, Starc with a full delivery outside off and Rahul gets an inside edge. Luckily for him, it is on to the pads and not the wicket.

11:02 am: Speaking of spin, Nathan Lyon is in attack. A slip and short leg for Pujara as he comes on. Third ball of the over and the ball spins away on the leg stump and Rahul paddle sweeps it for a four. No leg gully in place

11:02 am: KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara are going through play with confidence now. Playing smartly and effortlessly at times. Having no problem taking on pace or spin

10:54 am: KL Rahul places a full O’Keefe delivery and picks up a single for India’s fifty. 19.1 overs for India’s fifty at the cost of a wicket.

10:51 am: For the first time in the series, Mitchell Marsh comes into the attack for Australia. And he starts by conceding just one run to a KL Rahul single

10:46 am: Hazlewood making some errors with his line now. Both Pujara and KL Rahul making the most of it. Two balls – one down the leg and outside off – and both played away for a boundary

10:41 am: DROPPED! KL Rahul is dropped at 30. Plays it rather tamely after the ball pitches just outside the off stump and hits it straight to Peter Handscomb at silly mid-off. The dive and an outstretched left hand is good but not enough to hold on

10:38 am: FOUR! KL Rahul with a bat of slashed drive down the ground and the ball goes to the ropes. Not a big ground this and making the most of that. Rahul finds space between wicket and the mid-on fielder

10:30 am: DRINKS! An hour into the opening session on the first day’s play in the second Test and India are 29/1 at the break.

10:28 am: Last ball of the 13th over and KL Rahul unfreezes his arms. Outside the off stump and it is a length delivery, Rahul moves on to his front foot and drives it in front of point for a four

10:22 am: Bizarre bit of foot movement by KL Rahul. Almost moves his feet across to the off stump and is caught pad first. Played for the turn and the ball had him struck in front of middle and leg. Looked very close. Umpire Nigel Llong, though, shakes his head. A maiden over.

10:16 am: 10 overs in and India are 20/1. Been a good start for the visitors to take the wicket of Abhinav Mukund with Mitchell Starc striking. KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara in the middle now and facing this barrage of variety from the Aussies as Steve O’Keefe also entered the fray

10:07 am: First bowling change for Australia and it is Steve O’Keefe after seven overs. O’Keefe had 12 wickets in the last Test in Pune. Will he get the same effect in Bangalore too? And he goes for two runs in his first over

10:05 am: KL Rahul, playing his first Test at home, does well to adjust footwork at a late stage to push the ball away. Once again it was full and going on to hit the batsman’s pad low after two deliveries down the leg side. Getting good variation on his line to keep the batsman guessing

10:01 am: Back-to-back maidens from Australia. Starc and Hazlewood continue to bowl impressive lines and sticking to the off stump or just outside for both the right handers. Starc comes in once again and there is a forward short leg for Pujara

9:52 am: Very good over from Hazlewood there. No third slip and KL Rahul survives. The ball runs to the boundary in the process. Short and outside off, holds the line late and the outside edge is a safe one

9:45 am: GONE! Full length delivery from Mitchell Starc and Abhinav Mukund goes for a duck after eight balls played. Caught flush on the pad and the Tamil Nadu batsman tries to flick it down but misses it completely. India’s problems with the opening order continue

9:43 am: Mitchell Starc causing KL Rahul some problems. Banging it short and it is angled on the leg stump. Rahul gets the bottom hand into play to move the ball away and picks a single. Now, Mukund to face Starc for the first time.

9:37 am: On from the other end is Josh Hazlewood and to bat his first is Abhinav Mukund. And Hazlewood starts with a maiden over.

9:36 am: Flying start for India courtesy KL Rahul. Last ball of the over gets a thick edge and it goes through the gully region for a four.

9:30 am: All right! We’re set and ready for the second Test and the first day’s play. KL Rahul and Abhinav Mukund to open for India. Mitchell Starc has the ball. All Royal Challengers Bangalore players all around. And Rahul starts with a boundary. Leans in to the drive and the ball races away to the rope for a four

9:24 am: Both teams on the field of play for the national anthems. First the anthem of the visiting Australia side. And then the Indian anthem

9:19 am: Update from BCCI on Vijay’s shoulder problem: “He dived on his arm, hurting his shoulder in Pune” So shoulder issues for both KL Rahul and Vijay in Pune but the former has recovered, the latter hasn’t

9:12 am: Interesting turn of events of veiling of facts even from the Indian team management. Day before, all 16 were available for selection for the second Test. On Friday, Kohli said Hardik Pandya was unfit. And now, Murali Vijay has a shoulder problem. Good mind games, if it works out, from India

9:05 am: So two changes for India then with Murali Vijay sitting out after doing his shoulder in, Kohli reveals, and Abhinav Mukund comes in as the opener. Elsewhere, Jayant Yadav is dropped in favour of an extra batsman in Karun Nair. India thus reduced to four bowlers – Umesh, Ishant, Ashwin and Jadeja.

8:55 am: Toss in five minutes. Karun Nair is practicing at third slip as Ishant Sharma marks his run up. Abhinav Mukund is warming up rather vigorously too.

8:50 am: Australia have named an unchanged XI but Virat Kohli promised some changes for the second Test. What would that surprise be? A different team balance or is Kohli going to drop to four bowlers like he did against New Zealand. Or will the surprise be that India will stick to same XI for the first time. Ajinkya Rahane will not be dropped as Anil Kumble confirmed. Bowling change then?

8:30 am: The second Test is about to get underway in Bangalore. After losing the first match by 333 runs, Virat Kohli & Co would like to get back to dominating ways. Stay tuned as we bring you all the updates, scores, analysis

India vs Australia 2nd Test, Day 1: Captains reaction at the toss:

Virat Kohli: Good toss to win. We have more intent to win and to prove ourselves. Looks like a difficult Bangalore wicket. Good wicket to bat in the first three days and then tough for the bowlers

Steve Smith: Important to get some early wickets and attack from the first day. We have to be at our best to compete with India in this Test and in the entire series. This Australia side played well in Pune and there is no reason to change.

India vs Australia 2nd Test squads, playing eleven:

India XI: KL Rahul, Abhinav Mukund, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair, R Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravindra Jadeja, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma

Australia XI: Matt Renshaw, David Warner, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Steve O’Keefe, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

India vs Australia toss, 2nd Test:

India have won the toss as Virat Kohli flicks the coin and it comes in as heads. India to bat first in Bangalore.

India vs Australia Pitch Report, day 1, 2nd Test: It is flat and hard and it has plenty of runs in the first innings. Fast bowlers if they hit the areas then with the hot weather, it would be good for them. Early on, it is going to be great for batting. Seamers will come into play plenty with the new ball. It will be very different than the surface in Pune. A much better pitch and good one for batting. Whichever team wins the toss, will look to bat first. Mark Butcher and Ravi Shastri in the middle assess the pitch and they say there might be some moisture early on on the first morning but it’d subside as play goes on and suns beats down. More pundits say the pitch will be good to bat on on Day two and three but things will get tougher as play progresses

India vs Australia – preview of 2nd Test, Day 1 at Bangalore:

It was no surprise that a Test match in India saw a spinner dominating play, the contest ending quickly (in three days) and a solitary century. But the surprise, shock rather for most, was that the spinner wasn’t Indian, the contest didn’t end in hosts’ favour and the runs accumulated weren’t from an Indian willow. As Steve O’Keefe picked twelve-for and Steve Smith smashed a century, Australia handed India a hammering blow of 333 runs in the first Test in Pune. For the second Test, the surface – the big point of contention – will likely behave different and the outcome could very well differ too – or that’s what many at Chinnaswamy in Bangalore would hope.
