The Youth Congress in Punjab has a new leader at the helm. Mohit Mohindra, the 32-year-old son of veteran Congress leader and six-time former MLA Brahm Mohindra, is a professional lawyer and replaces Brinder Singh Dhillon.

Mohit, a graduate of the Punjab School of Law at Patiala’s Punjabi University, started his political journey in the Youth Congress in Patiala in 2016 and was promoted to the organisation’s secretary the following year. In 2018, he became the outfit’s general secretary. The following year, he was re-elected the state Youth Congress’s general secretary with the highest number of votes of the 44 candidates who contested the elections that year. His rise up the ranks continued and in 2021 he became the organisation’s vice-president.

Mohit contested the Punjab Assembly elections in February 2022 from Patiala Rural. With the Congress adopting a policy of “one family, one ticket”, Brahm Mohindra opted out of contesting and paved the way for his son’s electoral debut. Mohit, however, lost to Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Dr Balbir Singh by 53,474 votes.

After taking over the state Youth Congress, Mohit, in his address to the senior party leadership, said, “I want to assure the high command that we (Punjab Youth Congress office-bearers) will not seek (Assembly election) tickets. We will work hard for three-and-a-half years and only after that, if you find us competent, do give us your blessings.”

He also said, “I served the party for eight years, contested two elections, and it was my dream to work for the party while following the protocol. I did not inherit politics. I inherited how to remain loyal to the party.”

Mohit has also been an avid cricketer. He was the captain of the Punjab Under-15 cricket team that won the Polly Umrigar Trophy in 2005-’06. He also captained the Under-17 state team, which finished runner-up in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2007-’08. He also played for the Punjab Under-22 cricket team.
