Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath, whose bastion Chhindwara seems to be slipping away from his party this time, said Tuesday that he accepted the “decision of the people”.

According to the latest figures from the Election Commission, Kamal Nath’s son, Nakul Nath, is trailing by a margin of 71,441 votes against the BJP candidate Bunty Vivek Sahu in the seat.

“I accept the decision of the people of Chhindwara. The results for the INDIA alliance are really good. INDIA should try to form the government with other alliance partners,” Kamal Nath said in Bhopal.

Nath has won nine times from Chhindwara – his family turf – since 1980. In the 2019 polls, when the BJP bagged 28 of Madhya Pradesh’s 29 seats, Nakul Nath won Chhindwara by 37,536 votes to become the state’s lone Congress MP.

This time, however, the Congress party was beset with the resignations of three MLAs, including the three-time tribal MLA from Amarwara, Kamleshwar Shah. MP Nakul Nath also had to grapple with a mass exodus of over 2,000 party workers at the height of campaigning. The BJP had also dispatched several high profile leaders to the constituency to campaign against Nakul.
