KOLKATA: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday reprimanded the state president of her party’s students’ wing,Shanku Debpanda,for threatening that those affiliated with the CPM would not be allowed to teach at educational institutions. Mamata is said to have scolded Panda and told him not to make such threats again.

ROHTAK: A newborn baby girl was left abandoned by her parents at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science here,the third such incident in Haryana this month. The ailing baby is stated to be critical.

Six of family drown in Tamil Nadu well

VELLORE: Seven persons,including six members of a family,drowned when their autorickshaw fell into a 50-feet deep well at a village in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore on Saturday. Ironically,five of the victims,all labourers,were on way to a nearby place to dig a well. The accident occurred when the driver lost control of crowded autorickshaw at Vinayakapuram.

Homeguard held for selling drugs in UP

Meerut: A homeguard was arrested on Saturday for allegedly selling drugs to inmates of a juvenile home in Meerut,police said. Virendra brought charas from Ghaziabad and sold it to the inmates,SHO Avinash Gautam said.

SC criticises Lucknow Bench of High Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court criticised the two-judge Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court for passing a judgment on the UP amendments overruling another two-bench judgment. This was contrary to established judicial norms as ideally such a conflicting view should have been referred to a larger bench,the apex court said. “Instead of doing that,the Division Bench at Lucknow took the burden on themselves to decide the case. There are two decisions by two Division Benches from the same high court. We express our concern about the deviation from judicial decorum and discipline by both the Benches.”

BJP national executive meet on May 24

NEW DELHI: The BJP national executive will hold a two-day meeting starting May 24 in Mumbai,its first national-level gathering after the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand assembly poll losses. The choice of Mumbai could prove helpful for Nitin Gadkari,who is expected to face heat at the meeting. Gadkari is thought to be angling for a second term as party president — and the issue could be raised at the meeting by senior leaders opposed to it such as Sushma Swaraj and L K Advani. The BJP may also take a call on presidential polls at the meeting. Party leaders are curious to see if Gujarat CM Narendra Modi,who skipped the last national executive held in Delhi,comes.

Interests of children will be protected: Sibal

New Delhi: Promising to devise safeguards to protect the interests of disabled children,Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said: “There are divided views but I have said in the Rajya Sabha and I say it again that parents will have the option of providing home-based education to children with severe disabilities and the clause should not be used as an instrument by institutions to deny admission. We are willing to discuss this and we will issue guidelines to ensure interests of children are protected.”
