Villagers withdraw fast,resistance on
A FORTNIGHT after they began the latest round of indefinite fast against the commissioning of the nuclear power plant at Koodankulam, the agitating villagers have given up the protest following requests by retired Justice A P Shah among others, but resolved to continue their resistance to the project that has thus far failed to win over many among the local public in the southern part of Tamil Nadu.
After the initial success, the protesters led by Peoples Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) lost much traction when the AIADMK decided to withdraw support.
With both the Centre and state government disregarding the hunger strike that has been on since May 1,the fasting protesters fell ill one after the other and the number was reduced from a few hundreds to only 67 by Monday evening, when it was eventually withdrawn.
