CHANDIGARH, April 21: A colourful ceremony marked the inauguration of the five-day 42nd All India Police Duty Meet, being hosted by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) at its Basic Training Centre, Bhanu, near here today.

Declaring the meet open, the Governor of Haryana, Mahabir Prasad took salute from an impressive march past by 32 contingents representing various state and central police organisations.

In his welcome address, ITBP Director General Gautam Kaul said it was the solemn responsibility of the police forces to protect life and property, which requires fitness, alertness and motivation.

The ITBP chief added that the All India Police Duty Meet provides an opportunity to police organisations to review their proficiency and to strive for better performance and coordination.

The duty meet will conclude on April 25. About 1,100 police and para-military personnel from Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, besides central police forces including the BSF, CISF, CRPF, RPF, NSG and the SSB are participating.

The competitions to be held during the meet include the scientific aids to investigation and police photography, dog squads, rifle and pistol shooting and computer awareness, a judo and karate demonstration and a tattoo show.

A police welfare seminar will also be held on the occasion so as to explore various ways and means to ameliorate the lot of the police personnel all over the country.

Kaul presented a memento to the Governor as a token of respect on behalf of the organising committee and members of the jury, team managers and other representatives of the police force.

Haryana Director General of Police, S. K. Sethi, secretary to Haryana Governor Manik Sonawane, and other senior police and ITBP officers from neighbouring states and central police organisations were also present on the occasion.
