In many people, sweat equals terrible body odour, especially after a workout. While the most commonly advised solution would be ‘take a bath,’ dermatologist Dr Neera Nathan swears by hypochlorous acid to keep body odour at bay. “How to not be stinky in 2024. Here’s a personal hygiene hack I swear by as a dermatologist. If you start to stink during the day or smell bad post-workout, spray hypochlorous acid on your body, armpits, or feet to help neutralise odour. It may also help reduce breakouts on your face or body on the go or after sweating,” Dr Nathan claimed.
What is hypochlorous acid?
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a weak acid naturally produced by the body’s white blood cells as part of the immune system. “It acts as a powerful antimicrobial agent, killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Its effectiveness against bacteria makes it useful for various applications, including personal hygiene,” said Dr Karuna Malhotra, aesthetic physician and cosmetologist, Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic Rajouri Garden New Delhi.
According to Dr Malhotra, hypochlorous acid can be used in sprays or topical solutions to control body odour after a workout or during the day. It is a “strong antibacterial agent” that is also used in hand sanitisers and disinfectants.
However, its smell is usually mild compared to traditional deodorants, noted Dr Malhotra.
Dr Malhotra noted that HOCl is safe for the skin, like other skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid.
Products with HOCl are often marketed as skin-friendly and suitable for sensitive skin. They can be used after workouts to freshen up and reduce body odour without the need for heavy fragrances or chemicals.
“Since body odour is largely caused by bacteria breaking down sweat, HOCl helps by reducing bacterial growth. It is considered safe for skin and can neutralise odour without the harshness or irritation sometimes caused by deodorants or antiperspirants that contain alcohol or synthetic chemicals,” said Dr Malhotra.
Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic shared the following:
*One can opt for expert-recommended roll-ons.
*Wear natural fabrics such as cotton in the gym
*Maintain good personal hygiene which includes taking a shower immediately after the workout session.
*One can also use an antibacterial soap and products recommended by the doctor
*Give equal importance to your underarms and take utmost care of them just like you take care of your face and other parts of the body, said Dr Chause.
