Maha Shivratri 2025 Date in India: A major Hindu festival, Maha Shivratri is observed every year in commemoration of Lord Shiva, one of the main gods of Hinduism who is renowned for his dual roles as the Trimurti’s destroyer and transformer. Maha Shivratri, also known as the “Great Night of Shiva,” is an auspicious celebration for obtaining Lord Shiva’s blessings. It is believed that this is the night when Lord Shiva’s energies are most available.

Devotees worship Lord Shiva and reflect on morals and virtues like honesty, non-harm to others, charity, forgiveness, and the discovery of Shiva during this day and night of fasting, prayers, and meditations. It is widely observed by Hindus worldwide as well as in India and Nepal.
Maha Shivratri is observed in South India on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Magh, whilst it is celebrated in North India during the month of Phalgun.
However, Shivaratri is always celebrated and falls on the same day, even if calendar systems differ.
Symbolising the change from winter to spring and summer and emphasising the concepts of rebirth and renewal, Maha Shivaratri is usually observed in February or March.
This year, it will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, with the Nishita Kaal Puja, or midnight worship, scheduled from February 26, 12:09 AM to 12:59 AM on February 27.
