Digital creator Mary Boehmer recently shared on Instagram the story of a man who shed 50 pounds simply by chewing his food until it turned into liquid. Surprised? How well and how long you chew your food can impact your gut health and improve digestion. Here’s what experts say about the potential benefits of mindful chewing.

According to Dr Niyati Arora, BDS, MDS (prosthodontist) at Krown Hub Dental Clinic, Pitampura,  explained that chewing is the first step in digestion, and if we’re not doing it properly, the entire process can suffer. “Improper chewing means the food isn’t crushed effectively,” she said.

“When poorly chewed food reaches the stomach, the digestive juices and acids have to work harder to break it down. This can lead to poor nutrient absorption, stomach pain, and bloating,” Dr Arora added.

Since everyone has a different chewing pace, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. However, taking time to chew food thoroughly until it becomes mush is ideal for digestion.

Can chewing food thoroughly aid in weight loss?

Nutritionist Vedanti Dave suggests that chewing food thoroughly has an indirect connection to weight loss in several ways. It not only supports weight loss but also helps maintain it over the long term.

“When you chew food, it significantly influences the brain’s ability to process signals from the gut. It allows the mind to register signals of satiety through leptin (the satiety hormone), reducing calorie consumption — a benefit often lost when you eat in a rush or in distracting environments,” she explained.

In fast-paced eating scenarios, ghrelin (the hunger hormone) can take over, leading to overeating and, over time, weight gain.

Proper chewing can also help prevent sharp blood glucose spikes, improving insulin sensitivity and supporting the body’s use of fat, which contributes to weight loss in the bigger picture.

Holistic dietitian Vriti Srivastav noted that many people chew too quickly, which doesn’t give food particles enough time to mix with saliva and begin breaking down before reaching the stomach. This forces the stomach to work harder and release extra digestive juices.

“When we chew food thoroughly, it strengthens the gut and gives our brain enough time to register that we’re full, helping prevent overeating and weight gain over time,” she said.

According to Srivastav, weight loss is always a culmination of several factors, including lifestyle, fitness, and diet, rather than any one single approach.
