Drinking an adequate amount of water every day is, undoubtedly, quintessential to healthy living. It regulates body temperature, protects our spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, and helps eliminate wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements. While paying attention to how much water you are consuming is crucial, it’s equally significant to make sure you are drinking it the right way.
As such, actor Sonnalli Seygall, who regularly shares health and fitness tips with her followers, took to Instagram to share some dos and don’ts she follows when it comes to drinking water. “Did you know there are right and wrong ways to drink water? Our body is made up of 60% water and if don’t consume it properly it can lead to serious diseases,” she captioned the post, alongside a video of herself asking everyone to “hydrate“.
Here are a few dos and don’ts, according to Ayurveda, as shared by Sonnalli.
*Always sip small quantities of water because the water needs to mix with your saliva to make your body alkaline. “When you sip small quantities, it also keeps your body hydrated for longer and the water does not pass out in urination,” the actor wrote.
*She suggested not drinking water with your meals “as it washes away the digestive juices required for proper digestion“.
*Try not to drink water one hour before and one hour after your meals for optimal digestion, she suggested.
*Always sit and drink water for better absorption of minerals.
*Drink water only when you are thirsty. “Everybody is different and so are our requirements. Drinking water without thirst confuses the brain,” she said.
*Avoid drinking cold or chilled water. “It causes Mand Jatharagini, which means it decreases the digestive fire leading to all sorts of problems like acid reflux, low metabolism, heartburn and other digestive issues. It’s best to drink warm or room-temperature water,” Sonnalli explained.
She suggested following these tips “to feel good and live better”.
Agreeing, Vikas Chawla, Ayurveda Expert, Vedas Cure, said, “Invariably, everybody admits their impulse to check their phone after getting up in the morning. Rather as soon we wake up, we should drink water. This is known as Ushapan in Ayurveda, which ejects harmful toxins from the body. It refreshes and hydrates our bodies. Warm water is recommended in Ayurveda as it clears the intestines and reduces stomach bulges.”
“Warm water is an all-essential, while icy cold water should be avoided. According to Ayurveda, icy cold water puts out the digestive fire and causes numerous problems in the digestive system. Warm water cleanses skin and removes pimples and zits. It is a skin clearer and, therefore, must be consumed by women and men who face acne problems. One should drink water in a straight position. One should not drink water in a slanted or lying posture. People who have a habit of sipping water in between meals should avoid it completely. It affects the digestion system and causes heartburn and acid formation in the stomach,” he said.
