Actor Sambhavna Seth, along with her husband Avinash Dwivedi, has shared the heartbreaking story of her miscarriage after the first trimester, revealing the physical and emotional toll it took on them.

In an emotional video posted on her YouTube channel, the couple opened up about the challenges they faced. “Humare saath kaafi lambe time se yahi ho raha hai, ek baar aur hua hai. Sambhavna pregnant thi, aaj uska teesra mahina complete hua tha. Aaj uska bahut bada scan tha, jiske baad doctors ne bhi bola tha, aur humne bhi decide kiya tha, ki hum iss baat ko sabse share karenge. Sab kuch ab tak bahut acha jaa raha tha aur hum kaafi confident the ki yeh journey aage successful ho jayegi. Aaj ki scan mein jo baby tha, uski heartbeat aa chuki thi peechle scan mein… woh iss scan mein nahi dikhi (We’ve been going through this for a long time, and it has happened again. Sambhavna was pregnant, and this was her third month. Today, we had a scan and planned to share the news with everyone. Everything seemed fine, and we were hopeful that this journey would be successful. The baby’s heartbeat was there, but in the latest scan, the doctors couldn’t find it),” Avinash revealed.

While fighting her tears, Seth mentioned that she had been experiencing sharp pain around her waist and upper back, and the couple tried everything to alleviate the pain but it did not go away. “Itna dard mujhe normal mein kabhi nahi hua (I have never experienced this much pain under normal circumstances),” to which Avinash added, “Humein lagta tha pregnancy ke hi symptoms hai. Lekin aaj humein samajh mein aa raha hai ki iske (miscarriage) ke symptoms the (We thought these were pregnancy symptoms, but today we realize they were symptoms of a miscarriage).”

The TV actor added that she received at least 65 injections in just a span of three months. “65 se kam nahi, zyada ho sakte hain. Aur sirf isiliye main yeh pain leti rahi… mujhe pata nahi tha ki itne injections lene padenge… aur wo bahut painful hote hain (Not less than 65, maybe even more. And it’s only because of this that I endured the pain… I didn’t know I would have to take so many injections… and they are extremely painful).”

Miscarriages, especially in the first trimester, are not uncommon but can be devastating. Recognising symptoms that may indicate a problem early can make a crucial difference in ensuring timely medical care.

Differentiating between normal pregnancy symptoms and warning signs of a miscarriage

Dr Nancy Nagpal, consultant gynaecologist at Salubritas Medcentre, tells indianexpress.com, “Normal pregnancy symptoms include nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and feeling low. These vary for each mother and are not typically concerning.”

However, she states that warning signs of a miscarriage include symptoms that are excessive or severe, such as excessive vomiting, pelvic pain, bleeding, spotting, or colourful discharges like brownish discharge. If these symptoms occur, it is essential to consult a gynaecologist for further evaluation.

What role does medical intervention, such as injections or medications, play in supporting a high-risk pregnancy?

Medical interventions, such as injections and medications, play a vital role in supporting high-risk pregnancies. These often involve hormones that help the pregnancy progress. The hormones act as a source of nutrition for the fetus and assist in attaching the fetus to the uterine wall. “This attachment is critical for the growth of the placenta and the fetus. In essence, these interventions provide both structural support and nourishment necessary for the fetus’s development,” says Dr Nagpal.

Coping emotionally and physically with the loss of a pregnancy

Dr Nagpal admits, “Emotional support is crucial after a miscarriage. Support from both the partner and the family plays a significant role in helping the patient feel cared for and comfortable.”

Physically, the uterus typically recovers within six to eight weeks, during which it regains its lining and normal function. It’s essential to allow time for this recovery. Additionally, consulting a gynaecologist is important to determine the cause of the miscarriage. Understanding the reasons behind the loss and addressing any underlying factors is key before planning the next pregnancy, she stresses.
