Poha is a much-loved and healthy nutritious breakfast. Quick and easy to prepare, the light and tasty snack is a staple breakfast option in many Indian households. While people may be consuming poha daily, they might not be aware of the various health benefits it offers. According to Ruchika Jain, Chief Dietitian, Fortis Hospital, poha is highly nutritious and has several benefits for your overall well-being.

The expert said that it is a good source of instant energy and vitamin B as it is rice-based. “Poha is lactose-free, gluten-free and almost fat-free,” she said, adding that it is also light on the stomach and is easily digestible.

“It can be easily consumed as a part of a soft diet recommended for various health issues like typhoid, hepatitis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) etc,” the nutritionist added.

Poha contains about 4.6 per cent iron as the production process of poha requires the rice to pass through iron rollers. The flattened rice retains some of the iron from the process and is hence considered to be rich in iron. “You can squeeze lemon juice in your poha to help your body absorb the iron better,” she suggested.

Chef Sanjeev Kapoor also shared the benefits of poha on his Instagram account. “Poha is a rich source of healthy carbohydrates (70 per cent) and has very low-fat content at 30 per cent,” read the chef’s post. Also, poha is a good probiotic and may help keep the gut healthy, he mentioned.

Poha can be prepared in the traditional way with peanuts, curry leaves, onions, potato, and veggies or as chivda prepared from this flattened rice, which can be used as an evening snack. “To make it more protein-rich and filling, one can add peanuts, soya granules and sprouted legumes in it. More veggies should be added to make it more nutritious, tasty and filling,” said Ruchika.
