Taking a cue from her wellness diaries, we decided to understand why have this concoction.

Sweta Bose, nutrition and dietetics, NH RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundpur, Kolkata said that starting your day with basil seeds water or sabja seeds can be a healthy choice. “You can soak about 1 to 2 tablespoons of basil seeds in a glass of water for about 15 minutes until they swell up. Drinking this water can offer several potential benefits, including aiding digestion, providing hydration, and offering a source of fibre and nutrients,” said Bose.

Bose also mentioned that according to Ayurveda, sabja seeds are said to have a “cooling effect on the body”. “Apart from a rich source of dietary fibre, it helps promote satiety and reduces appetite,” said Bose. She added that it is also rich in vitamin K, calcium, magnesium and iron.

“It contains alpha linolenic acid, a type of omega 3 fatty acid which aids heart health by reducing inflammation and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels,” said Bose.

What more? “It is also antioxidants-rich like flavonoids and polyphenols which help combat oxidative stress,” said Bose.

However, keep in mind that while basil seeds are generally safe, some people might experience allergies or gastrointestinal discomfort.

“It’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before making it a regular part of your routine, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are on medication. Remember to maintain a balanced diet and not rely solely on any single food or drink for health benefits,” said Bose.
