Certain chemicals or neurotransmitters in our body are responsible for maintaining our happiness levels. But did you know that by doing very simple things we can always take charge of our happiness? Turns out, the various actions and mental attitudes that we practice can help the release of these happy or feel-good hormones. So, if you want to improve your happiness levels, read on to find out how you can hack your happy hormones.
But before that, let’s understand what exactly are these happy hormones, and their functioning.
Dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin are known as happy hormones. Talking about them in detail, Dr Pankaj B Borade, (MBBS, MD Psychiatry) Consultant Psychiatrist Ruby Hall Clinic told indianexpress.com:
These happy hormones are released in the body through various mechanisms. Dr Gautami Nagabhirava, Senior Neuro Psychiatrist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad simplified it for us as:
Below are a few simple ways to hack these happy hormones. You can practice these things daily for a happier life, as suggested by Dr Nagabhirava:
1. Regular exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, improving your mood.
2. Practicing gratitude increases serotonin levels and promotes feelings of happiness.
3. Engaging in activities you enjoy triggers the release of dopamine, providing a sense of reward.
4. Spending time with loved ones releases oxytocin, enhancing happiness and well-being.
5. Getting enough sleep maintains balanced hormone levels, including serotonin and dopamine.
6. Eating a balanced diet rich in tryptophan supports serotonin production.
7. Practicing mindfulness and meditation reduces stress and promotes the release of endorphins and serotonin.
8. Lastly, laughing and smiling release endorphins and trigger a positive feedback loop in the brain.
While these methods can provide temporary mood boosts, for an everlasting happiness (or contentment rather) it is crucial to address the underlying causes of unhappiness. “Finding what brings you joy and boosts your happiness is a personal journey, as everyone’s body is unique. Experiment with various activities and habits to discover what works best for you,” suggested Dr Nagabhirava.
He added, “Do not solely depend on external factors for happiness. Cultivate a positive mindset and seek internal sources of fulfillment to achieve lasting happiness”.
It is also crucial to remember that happiness is a complex and multifaceted experience influenced by various factors such as genetics, environment, and personal circumstances and other emotions like sadness, disappointment, and some level of anxiety are also normal.
“While these tips can contribute to a positive mood, it is essential to prioritise your overall well-being and seek professional help if you are experiencing persistent feelings of unhappiness or depression,” concluded Dr Nagabhirava.
