Tamannaah Bhatia swears by leading a healthy lifestyle. But, like many of us, she just can’t give up her morning coffee. “My dietitian would not be happy but I do drink coffee (laughs). That’s my happy drink,” the Stree 2 actor said.

Adding that it’s her me-time, the 35-year-old continued, “It’s a sacred moment. When I am drinking coffee, I am figuring out my entire day. I plan my day during that time.”

And how does she like her brew? “Double shot espresso with foam, which gets over really fast,” Bhatia told fashion influencer Masoom Minawala on her podcast.

Taking a cue from the actor’s admission, let’s learn how morning coffee affects the body.

Jinal Patel, dietitian at Zynova Shalby Hospital, Mumbai, said some people drink coffee first thing in the morning every day. “This helps them feel energised and ready for the day ahead,” said Patel.

However, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can harm your gut in the long term. Coffee is acidic, and consuming it on an empty stomach can irritate the lining, leading to acid reflux and heartburn. “Some tend to experience acidity as it stimulates acid production in the stomach. This can further lead to acid reflux, heartburn, burping, bloating, and indigestion,” said Patel.

Drishya Ale, dietitian, Paras Health, Gurugram, added that drinking coffee without food can cause blood sugar spikes and subsequent crashes. This can lead to people experiencing fatigue. “For some individuals, coffee on an empty stomach can also increase cortisol levels, potentially contributing to anxiety and disrupted energy levels,” said Ale.

However, everyone is unique. “One should try eating something before drinking coffee. The food helps slow down the absorption of coffee in the bloodstream, which reduces gut issues,” said Patel.

You can also replace regular coffee with nut milk or green tea to start your day.
