Taarak Mehta fame Manmeet Singh recently shared “ancient” wisdom. According to the actor, having a glass of water before sleeping and bathing helps reduce the chances of a heart attack. “We have heard a lot of times that a person suffers a heart attack while bathing or in sleep. I have heard a good habit that can help us is to drink water before going to sleep, and before going for a bath,” Singh said on his Instagram.

He added that it is also advised that one should pour water on their legs – whether cold or hot- instead of the head while bathing. “Blood flow is adjusted, and there are fewer chances of a heart attack,” he shared.

Is there any truth to these claims?

Dr Sanjeeva Kumar Gupta, consultant, dept of cardiology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, said that maintaining proper hydration is essential for overall health, and its role in preventing heart-related issues has drawn significant attention. “While there is no direct evidence suggesting that drinking water at specific times — like before sleep or a bath — can prevent heart attacks, staying hydrated does support cardiovascular health in general,” said Dr Gupta.

Drinking water before bed, Dr Gupta explained, can help maintain blood circulation, especially since dehydration overnight may lead to thicker blood, increasing the workload on the heart. “However, excessive water intake just before bed may disrupt sleep due to frequent urination. A balanced approach is to stay hydrated throughout the day rather than consuming large quantities of water at night,” said Dr Gupta.

According to Dr Gupta, drinking water before a bath may have a slight “stabilising effect on blood pressure”, particularly during hot showers, which can dilate blood vessels and temporarily lower blood pressure. “Proper hydration ensures that your cardiovascular system can adapt to these changes effectively,” said Dr Gupta.

However, in patients with severe heart failure, Dr Gupta pointed out that fluid overload can worsen symptoms and strain the heart. “For such patients, fluid intake should be restricted to less than 1.5 liters in 24 hours to prevent complications,” said Dr Gupta.

While hydration is beneficial, preventing heart attacks involves a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and routine health check-ups. “Drinking water at strategic times should complement broader lifestyle measures rather than be the sole preventive approach,” said Dr Gupta.
