In every interview, Shalini Passi shares something new about herself. This time, she has opened up about her lifestyle, including her sleep routine and a remedy she swears by.

Stating that she ensures to sleep for eight hours a night, Passi said: “Not by the clock. Sometimes, I do wake up abruptly from sleep owing to some work. Having said that, I am sure to finish off my work for the next day and then go to sleep. I keep my planning minimum and keep maximum execution in the morning.”

The 49-year-old informed that she swears by nutmeg or jaiphal for good sleep. “Grind nutmeg and take half a teaspoon of it in warm water. It is very good,” she told Curly Tales, adding that chamomile tea is “also good, and I take it.”

Does this remedy work?

Dr Ushakiran Sisodia, registered dietician and clinical nutritionist, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai, shared that adding herbal ingredients to tea can benefit those looking to improve their sleep quality. “Many individuals are turning towards natural remedies to alleviate sleeplessness caused by work pressures and other stressors,” said Dr Sisodia.

According to celebrity nutritionist Shikha Gupta, there is an increased focus on foods high in melatonin to get better sleep. However, sleep is also caused by deficiencies like potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, and calcium, along with high-stress levels, i.e., high cortisol. “This is an unknown factor that most people ignore,” said Gupta.

Dr Sisodia noted that nutmeg, known for its nutty and slightly sweet taste, relieves anxiety-related sleeplessness.

What to note?

“It should be used in moderation as it can be somewhat intense and may not suit individuals sensitive to spicy flavours,” said Dr Sisodia.

Experts urge healthy lifestyles that include frequent exercise and a balanced diet to stay safe, handle stress, and sleep well. “Deep breathing exercises and other mindfulness and relaxation methods may also be helpful,” shared Gupta.
