Rakul Preet Singh loves to keep herself fit by not just exercising but good, healthy food too. So, she always prefers the ‘basic’ but ‘balanced’ food — ghar ka khaana or homemade food. The Chhatriwali actor recently shared a glimpse of her plate which included a sumptuous meal with jowar roti, green moong dal, protein-infused scrambled eggs, and a leafy vegetable.
“Balance is the key,” said Rakul, in the Instagram story.
A balanced diet plays a pivotal role in maintaining overall health and well-being. It helps supply essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and energy necessary for the body to function optimally.
“Primarily, a balanced diet ensures the body receives adequate macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Carbohydrates act as the primary energy source, fuelling bodily functions and physical activities. Proteins support growth, repair tissues, and maintain muscle mass. Healthy fats are essential for cell function, hormone production, and nutrient absorption,” said Ruchika Jain, chief clinical nutritionist, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj.
A balanced diet emphasises the consumption of various fruits and vegetables, providing a rich array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants crucial for boosting the immune system, preventing illnesses, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.
“Fibre, found abundantly in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, aids in digestion, prevents constipation, and contributes to a feeling of fullness, assisting in weight management and reducing the risk of obesity,” said Jain.
Balancing calorie intake with expenditure is key to weight management and overall health. A diet of excessive calories can lead to weight gain and related health issues, while insufficient calorie intake can result in malnutrition and deficiencies.
Adequate hydration, often overlooked, is crucial for various bodily functions, including metabolism and toxin elimination, mentioned Jain.
According to Jain, a balanced diet supports mental health. “Essential nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and nuts, have been linked to improved cognitive function and reduced risk of depression,” said Jain. Salmon, flax seeds, chia seeds, and nuts, are some of the other well-known sources that should be part of your diet.
