How much fat to have is a common question that many people ask. While no one answer applies to all, one should not exceed 500 ml of fat (in all its forms), said nutritionist Amita Gadre in a recent post on her YouTube channel. “Your total fat intake (including ghee, and oil) should not surpass 500 ml,” said Gadre.
“Rather than break your head over refined or extra virgin oil, try to regulate and limit your total fat intake including added and inherent dietary fat. Remember, you can have higher cholesterol level even if you are consuming kacchi ghani oil or A2 bilona ghee made in front of you- if your total fat intake is high,” added Gadre in the caption to the post on Instagram.
Mohini Dongre, dietician, Narayana Hospital Gurugram said that regulating the total fat intake, irrespective of the source, is a sensible approach to maintaining a balanced and heart-healthy diet.
Dietary fat plays a crucial role in our body’s functions, including energy production, nutrient absorption, and hormone regulation. “However, excessive fat consumption can contribute to weight gain, heart disease, and other health issues,” said Dr Rohini Patil, nutritionist, and founder, Nutracy Lifestyle.
It’s important to note that not all fats are created equal. While some fats, like those found in nuts, seeds, and avocados, are considered healthy and should be included in moderation, others, such as saturated and trans fats, should be limited/avoided, contended Dr Patil. “Therefore, individuals should aim to incorporate a balance of healthy fats into their diet while staying within the recommended limit,” said Dr Patil.
Experts support this guideline as it encourages individuals to make mindful choices about their dietary fat intake. Ghee and oil are common sources of fat in many diets, and while they can add flavour and richness to meals, consuming them in excess can lead to health problems.
“While the type of fat, whether from refined or extra virgin oil, kacchi ghani oil, or A2 bilona ghee, can influence lipid profiles, it is the cumulative quantity that plays a pivotal role in overall health. Limiting total fat intake to 500 ml, reflects a practical guideline for individuals aiming to manage their cholesterol levels and promote cardiovascular well-being,” said Dongre.
By setting a limit of 500 ml for total fat intake, individuals can better manage their fat consumption and reduce their risk of health issues associated with high-fat diets, added Dr Patil.
This restriction not only addresses concerns about excessive calorie consumption but also aligns with a diverse and nutrient-rich diet.
Amidst the current popularity of high-fat diets like keto, it’s crucial to emphasise that moderation remains key. “Even seemingly wholesome oils and ghee varieties can contribute to elevated cholesterol if consumed excessively,” said Dongre.
