The ‘King of Fruits’ is known for its culinary versatility as it can be incorporated in a myriad of dishes–be it desserts, drinks or even main course. But have you heard of Miyazaki mangoes, the most expensive mango variety that is cultivated in Japan? The Miyazaki mango is one of the most famous fruits found in the Miyazaki city in Japan.

Recently, Miyazaki mango priced at around Rs 2.75 lakh per kg in the international market was showcased in the seventh edition of Siliguri’s three-day-long Mango Festival. Read on to find out more about this mango variety.

Origin

The Miyazaki mango originates from the Miyazaki city in Japan’s Kyushu province and its history dates back to the 1980s, when a group of researchers from Miyazaki University and local farmers came up with the idea for the plant.

Researchers used both old-fashioned breeding techniques and new technology to create a mango that would grow well in the climate and soil of the area. This led to the invention of Miyazaki mango, which was not only tasty but also had a longer shelf life and was less likely to be eaten by pests.

Benefits

Also known as ‘Egg of the Sun’ due to their bright colour and egg-like shape, these mangoes are generally cultivated during the peak harvest period between April and August. Unlike regular green or yellow mangoes, the skin of Miyazaki mango turns from purple to flaming red when ripe.

N Lakshmi, Senior Dietician, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad said that Miyazaki mangoes not only offer a delectable tropical treat but also provide several health benefits. “These mangoes are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin A and dietary fibre. Vitamin C supports a healthy immune system, while vitamin A promotes good vision and skin health. The fibre content aids digestion and contributes to a healthy gut. They also contain antioxidants that help protect against oxidative stress and promote overall well-being,” she informed.

While Miyazaki mangoes are a delightful treat for most people, N Lakshmi said that individuals with known allergies to mangoes or related fruits should avoid consuming them. “Additionally, individuals with specific medical conditions, such as diabetes or kidney problems, should monitor their mango intake due to the fruit’s natural sugar content. It is advisable to consult registered dietician for personalised advice if you have any concerns about incorporating Miyazaki mangoes into your diet,” she added.

What makes these mangoes so expensive?

Talking about this, Bhavisha Khuman, Nutritionist & Dietician, Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre said that the reason for its high price is due to several factors which make it unique and sought-after. “Firstly, the Miyazaki mango is grown in a region with ideal conditions for its cultivation, which includes a warm climate, fertile soil and access to clean water. This results in a fruit that is larger, sweeter and juicier than other mango varieties.”

Additionally, the Miyazaki mango is carefully cultivated and harvested by farmers who use traditional and meticulous methods to ensure the fruit’s quality. The mangoes are hand-picked at the perfect time to ensure they are ripe and ready to eat, which results in a superior flavour and texture, added Khuman.

Moreover, the nutritionist also pointed out that the Miyazaki mango is also highly regulated by the Japanese government, which ensures that the fruit meets strict quality standards before being sold. This includes criteria such as weight, size, sugar content, and appearance, which further increases the cost of the fruit.

Concluding, she said, “The Miyazaki mango has become a symbol of luxury and exclusivity in Japan and around the world. Its high price tag has created a sense of prestige and desirability among consumers who are willing to pay a premium for this rare and exceptional fruit.”
