Masaba Gupta has been advocating for a fitness-oriented lifestyle in many of her social media posts where she details her diet, exercise, and more. The ace fashion designer recently shared a glimpse of her winter special breakfast with some good old bajra.

Sharing a glimpse of the bajra chilla, Masaba wrote on her Instagram Stories, “Winter breakfast chilla full of the good stuff – pumpkin, bajra, sesame, spinach, chillies, ginger, and garlic.”

Here’s how the breakfast combination of bajra and pumpkin is good for you.

Mohini Dongre, dietician, Narayana Hospital Gurugram called bajra-pumpkin chilla a wholesome winter delight, blending the nutritional richness of bajra (pearl millet) and the seasonal goodness of pumpkin. “This traditional Indian dish not only offers a warm and comforting flavour but also provides several health benefits tailored for the winter months,” said Dongre.

Bajra is a nutrient-dense grain, rich in fibre and essential minerals. “Consuming it helps maintain a steady release of energy, keeping you warm in the chilly weather.

One of the standout features of bajra is its high magnesium content. Magnesium plays a crucial role in many bodily functions, including the regulation of body temperature. “This mineral helps in improving circulation and oxygen flow in the body, making it an ideal choice for the winter diet when maintaining internal body warmth is crucial,” said Dt. Jyoti Khaniojh, nutrition and dietetics, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj.

“Pumpkin adds a unique touch, contributing vitamins A and C, crucial for immune support during the flu-prone winter season,” mentioned Dongre.

Concurring, Dr Khaniojh added that vitamin A is crucial for maintaining healthy skin and vision, both of which can be affected by the harsh winter conditions. “Vitamin C, on the other hand, plays a vital role in boosting the immune system, which is particularly important during the winter when people are more prone to catching colds and other infections,” said Dr Khaniojh.

Moreover, the combination of bajra and pumpkin promotes digestion, alleviating common winter digestive issues. Dongre shared that the fibre content aids in maintaining a healthy gut, preventing discomfort associated with heavy winter meals.

According to Dr Khaniojh, the combination of bajra and pumpkin also ensures a low glycaemic index, which is beneficial for maintaining stable blood sugar levels – an important factor for overall health, especially in the cold season when physical activity might be reduced.

“The chilla is versatile and can be customised with spices like ginger and turmeric, known for their anti-inflammatory properties. These spices not only enhance the flavour but also provide additional warmth and potential immune-boosting effects,” said Dongre.
