Indulging in the delightful taste of strawberries is a true pleasure, and what if we told you that you could enjoy this delicious fruit all year round?
Chef Neha Deepak Shah shared a strawberry storage hack on Instagram, and it’s certainly a game-changer. If you’re a strawberry enthusiast, keen on relishing this tart delight beyond its usual season, this simple yet effective hack is a must-try.
Depending upon the fruit, some fruits retain their maximum nutrients in a frozen state while some possess them when consumed fresh. “When you pick any fruit, it has the peak nutrients at that point in time. And if you freeze that food immediately, its nutrient profile retains the same as that of a fresh fruit,” clinical dietitian Garima Goyal previously told indianexpress.com.
Dr Brij Vallabh Sharma, consultant internal medicine, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur agreed with her at the time, and said that having frozen fruit on hand can be a convenient and practical choice for various reasons. “Firstly, frozen fruit retains most of its nutritional value as it’s typically frozen at its peak ripeness, locking in vitamins and minerals. This makes it a viable option for those looking to maintain a balanced diet, especially when fresh fruit isn’t readily available. Secondly, frozen fruit has a longer shelf life, reducing the risk of spoilage and food waste. It’s versatile and can be used in smoothies, desserts, or as a topping for yoghurt or oatmeal,” told Dr Sharma.
To embark on this strawberry preservation journey, start by carefully selecting the best, unblemished strawberries. Once you have your prized fruits, remove the leaves and give them a thorough rinse to eliminate any lingering dirt. Post-wash, use a towel to pat the strawberries dry, ensuring you rid them of any excess moisture.
With the strawberries now prepped, proceed by chopping off the stem area. Place the strawberries on a tray and pop them into the freezer. Once the strawberries are partially frozen, transfer them into a convenient zip-lock bag and return them to the freezer for the final freeze.
Voilà! By adhering to this uncomplicated process, you can successfully preserve the freshness and flavor of strawberries for up to a year. When the time comes to enjoy your stored berries, simply bring them to room temperature before indulging in their juicy sweetness.
If you’re feeling a bit more creative, consider blending fresh strawberries to create a luscious puree. Pour this vibrant puree into an ice tray and freeze the cubes. Once frozen, transfer the strawberry cubes into a zip-lock bag for convenient storage.
Thanks to Chef Neha’s ingenious strawberry storage hack, you can now revel in the delightful taste of strawberries, no matter the season. So, the next time you chance upon a tempting deal on strawberries, seize the opportunity to stock up and follow this simple guide to keep the sweetness alive in your kitchen throughout the year.
