American entrepreneur and venture capitalist Bryan Johnson — who has reportedly spent over three million dollars on human ageing research — recently revealed his diet pattern. “I eat all my food within a six-hour window. My last meal of the day is at 11 am. So, I fast all the way up to bedtime. I like six hours of eating and 18 hours of fasting. Each person is different. I find that it is most conducive to the best, high-quality sleep,” the 47-year-old told YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia.

During the conversation, he also revealed his “anti-ageing diet.” “Lentils, vegetables, berries, nuts, seeds, and extra virgin olive oil. (I) avoid sugar, processed foods, fried foods, additives, and ingredients the names of which you can’t read,” the millionaire CEO added.

What is the 18:6 intermittent fasting, and how does it work?

Jinal Patel, dietitian at Zynova Shalby Hospital in Mumbai, said that this fasting pattern can improve one’s metabolism and allow the body to burn carbohydrates and fats for energy more efficiently.

Patel added one would be able to focus on eating whole foods consisting of healthy fats, satiate cravings, and avoid binge eating. Moreover, one will also be able to keep his/her weight in check.

However, prolonged fasting—for 18 hours—and eating for a 6-hour window can take a toll on one’s overall well-being. “It can lead to concerning signs and symptoms such as headaches, irritation, acidity, and heartburn. One may end up eating in higher quantities during the eating window, too,” said Patel.

Patel also said one can get hunger pangs and become restless and angry, and experience fatigue, nausea vomiting, and low energy levels. “One will feel cranky and experience burping, bloating, insulin resistance, and low blood pressure. One has to be mindful and avoid fasting for longer periods to stay active and energised. It is essential to stay hydrated enough and listen to your body’s signals by choosing a sustainable diet,” said Patel.
