The antioxidant content in a tea form depends heavily on how the tea is prepared, said clinical dietitian Garima Goyal

You may have tried green tea, black tea, milk with tea, and many other varieties of this much-loved beverage. But have you ever tried amla or gooseberry tea which, according to chef Venkatesh Bhat, has 2500 more antioxidants than green tea? In a snippet from one of his shows shared online, he is seen sharing the recipe of the tea prepared with amla, ginger, mint leaves, and ajwain or carrom seeds.

Ingredients

1 – Amla, crushed
4 – Mint leaves
1 inch – Ginger
Carrom seeds
Water

Method

*Boil water and add all the ingredients.
*Let it simmer.
*Strain the tea. Sip and have the tea.

According to Bhat, this tea is a good remedy for heartburn, and heart health, and even helps delay ageing. He went on to say that the combination of amla with mint, ginger, and carrom seeds has more than 2,500 antioxidants than green tea which has 10 antioxidants. “The proportion of antioxidants is more. So, make this tea every day and drink,” said Bhat.

For the uninitiated, green tea has compounds like catechins, which is a type of polyphenol that has antioxidant properties and numerous health benefits.

So, is amla tea better than green tea?

According to clinical dietitian Garima Goyal, the claim that amla tea has 2,500 times more antioxidants than green tea is “likely exaggerated” or taken out of context.

Concentration and preparation – The antioxidant content in a tea form depends heavily on how it is prepared. “Fresh amla and dried amla powder both differ in antioxidant concentration. When you make tea, some antioxidants might not fully transfer from the fruit or powder into the water,” said Goyal.

Serving sizes – Goyal shared that the comparison must account for the serving sizes and the bioavailability of the antioxidants in each form.

Goyal elucidated that amla tea is indeed a powerhouse of antioxidants and may offer more antioxidants per serving compared to green tea, but the exact multiplier effect (e.g., 2,500 times more) is not straightforward without specific, controlled comparisons.

“Both amla tea and green tea have their unique benefits and can be part of a healthy diet,” said Goyal.
