Debina Bonnerjee, despite having two young daughters, makes sure to exercise every day. And her latest workout is something many celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Rakul Preet Singh, and Deepika Padukone enjoy doing too — aerial yoga. “Aerial yoga looks fancy. But it is really difficult. There is no harness. It is all core strength. Initially, you don’t feel anything but soon after, you feel the increase in strength to pull your body up. It increases your core strength,” said Bonnerjee.
Debina added that she started doing aerial yoga after having her girls. “I did yoga but not aerial, which is so different and difficult. Aerial yoga has healed me a lot internally because I used to feel a lot of pain in certain parts of my body. My body has reset after being pulled up, and twisted. Even the back pain induced due to anesthesia during delivery has gone,” Bonnerjee continued.
According to Debina Bonnerjee, after a C-section, it is better to do things like aerial yoga, or Pilates because it enhances core strength. “You don’t need to do a lot of jumping movements, which may discomfort the body. That’s the best way to get back because 1-1.5 years, I just did that. Now, I am back to lifting weights,” she told Rohit Roy on his podcast.
Notably, aerial yoga uses a soft, fabric hammock with high-density nylon that can sustain up to 100 kg.
You move between several standard yoga postures and aerial variations of those poses during the session while being supported by the hammock. “Simple stretches while seated on the hammock are some of the most fundamental postures, while others advance to hanging upside down while gripping your thighs, ankles, or feet for stability,” said Himalayan Siddha Akshar, founder, Akshar Yoga Research and Development Centre.
How does it help develop the core? Your muscles have to work harder since gravity is exerting more force on your body than usual. “Because you need to use your core muscles to balance and stabilise yourself during your yoga session, aerial yoga is also a fantastic core workout,” said Akshar.
These advanced techniques put a lot of strain on your core and cause you to lose weight quickly.
However, a solid and consistent foundation is necessary if you want to move on to harder levels. According to Akshar, regularly performing a few easy workouts will build your core and arm strength preparing you for advanced postures and also tone the body in the process.
