Most relationships today lack communication and intimacy is something that has often been spoken about. But have you ever wondered if the spark that your relationship warrants is how comfortable you are with your partner and how often you tease each other? This mundane banter can help you reignite and steal those ‘just us’ moments in the middle of a busy day.

“Maintaining the fun and joy in a relationship is important. It can often involve engaging in healthy banter and joking with each other. This can turn towards involving some amount of teasing too,” said clinical psychologist Kamna Chhibber in a conversation with indianexpress.com.

Agreed Dr Pavana S, consultant psychiatrist, sexologist, and relationship expert, Vidyaranyapura, Bangalore, and mentioned that teasing, often dismissed as useless and playful, plays a significant role in the dynamics of relationships. “While it may, healthy teasing can be a valuable tool for strengthening the bond between partners,” said Dr Pavana.

What is healthy teasing?

Healthy teasing, experts suggest, can be simple things on which you can goof around without making hurtful personal comments. “This needs to be done healthily such that it does not trigger the other person or lead to pinpointing towards things that they are sensitive about,” said Chhibber.

Ways to tease in a relationship

Dr Pavana listed the following ways

*Light-hearted playfulness: Gentle teasing with playful remarks and jokes can bring laughter and joy into your relationship.

*Inside jokes: Sharing private jokes or references creates a unique connection and fosters intimacy.

*Flirting: A dash of flirtatious teasing can keep the spark alive and maintain a sense of attraction.

How does it help the relationship?

The benefits of teasing are plenty, said Dr Pavana

*Enhanced communication: Teasing opens the door to effective communication. It encourages partners to express themselves more freely, fostering trust and understanding.

*Stress relief: Laughter triggered by teasing can release endorphins, reducing stress and promoting a positive atmosphere.

*Connection: Teasing creates a shared experience, making couples feel like they are part of an exclusive world, and enhancing emotional connection.

*Conflict resolution: Using humour in teasing can defuse tense situations and help resolve conflicts with a lighter touch.

What to keep in mind?

While teasing can be fun, it’s important to balance it with genuine affection and support. Too much teasing without emotional connection can lead to misunderstandings, said Dr Pavana.

It’s important to be careful not to breach personal boundaries and also ensure that the other person is not uncomfortable with the kind of teasing that is happening. Concurrently the person who is being teased, must keep in mind what is happening and take it in the right spirit.

“If something is not okay at all then making sure that they communicate the same clearly and precisely and without ambiguity is important,” asserted Chhibber.

Dr Pavana also underlined respecting the other person’s beliefs and values. “Always maintain respect for your partner’s feelings and boundaries. Teasing should never cross the line into ridicule or cruelty,” said Dr Pavana.

What’s your takeaway?

Teasing can be a powerful tool in relationships, fostering communication, intimacy, and connection. “When done with respect and consideration, it adds a delightful dimension to your partnership. Remember, the key is to find the right balance that works for both you and your partner,” said Dr Pavana.
