Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Wednesday said the restrictions placed after the revocation of the state’s special status under Article 370 were necessary to prevent any civilian casualties.

Addressing a press conference, the Governor said a massive recruitment drive will take place in the state in the next 2-3 months. Assuring the people of peace in the state, Malik said that normalcy will soon return to the Valley.

His presser came hours after the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre on Jammu and Kashmir press freedom issue and Article 370 pleas.

Malik admitted that pellet guns were used during protests in the Valley but said forces took utmost precaution to prevent any injuries. He said most of the pellet injuries were below the waist.

On the communication restrictions in the state, the J&K Governor said the Internet is a handy tool for anti-national elements and the restoration of connections will be deferred for some more time,

The J&K Governor also denied having talked to any political leaders in the Valley. He was referring to some news reports that he spoke to Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. The two leaders were detained following the imposition of restrictions in the state after the abrogation of Article 370 provisions.

“Don’t be sad about detention of political leaders, it will help them in their political careers.” he told reporters.

The Centre, he said, will soon make a ‘big’ announcement on Jammu and Kashmir.

Later in the day, mobile phone calling was being restored in the border district of Rajouri. “The mobile phone calling of all cellular operators will be restored in next one to two hours,” said Rajouri SSP Yougal Manhas, barely hours after the Governor’s presser.

The administration had earlier restored calling on BSNL mobile network. However, this did provide much relief to the people as most of them in the district had already switched over to private cellular operators.
