A MiG-27 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in West Bengal’s Tantipara area on Friday night killing two civilians on the ground, though the pilot managed to eject safely, the IAF said.
“A MiG-27 aircraft crashed near Alipurdwar in West Bengal at about 2030 hrs. The pilot has ejected safely, but there were two civilian casualties on the ground. A Court of Inquiry is underway to assess the cause of the crash. The aircraft was based at Hashimara airbase and further details on the crash are awaited,” said Group Captain S Birdi, spokesperson IAF.

Sub Divisional Officer Samiran Mondal said the pilot suffered some injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The aircraft took off from the airbase at 8.20 pm and crashed near Alipurdwar town around 8.30 pm. Red Cross officials were at the site besides an IAF team.
