‘Housing for All’ initiative set for June 25 launch

The urban housing component of the mission aims to create 2 crore houses by 2022 with a Central grant of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.30 lakh per house.

PMAY subsumes several of the UPA regime’s housing schemes such as the Rajiv Awas Yojana while introducing a host of new ones, while AMRUT is the replacement for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

“The PM will release guidelines for all three missions that would then be executed by the state and urban local bodies,” said a senior Central government official.

Modi is expected to talk on the issue of effective urbanisation in his address to mayors, municipal commissioners and other executive heads of 500 corporations and municipalities across India at the two-day launch event in the capital city.

Each with a population of one lakh and above, these 500 cities and towns together account for 73 per cent of India’s urban population and will be taken up under the Rs 50,000 crore AMRUT mission for upgrading infrastructure and PMAY for creation of affordable housing.

The Rs 48,000 crore Smart Cities project, on the other hand, will comprise 100 cities. Officials said that the launch will also showcase some of the ongoing projects and schemes as best practices across the country. These include the cluster redevelopment project at Mumbai’s Bhendi bazaar, Ahmedabad’s Local Area Planning among others.
