After days of deadlock, the ruling NC-Congress coalition have brokered a seat sharing deal with both the parties deciding to contest on three Lok Sabha seats each. NC is to contest on all the three seats of Kashmir Valley while Congress is to put up its candidate on the Ladakh seat besides the two candidates for Jammu and Udhampur seats which have been already announced by it.

The two parties decided on this on Thursday after PDP announced the names of its candidates for Baramulla and Anantnag parliamentary seats. With PDP patron,Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, deciding not to contest the Anantnag parliamentary seat,a PDP bastion, the ruling NC-Congress alliance announced the seat sharing agreement on Thursday.

From the PDP its former minister,Peer Mohammad Hussain, will contest the Anantnag parliamentary seat and its senior leader and former minister,Dilawar Mir,will contest the Baramulla seat, the NC decided to field its former Kashmir provincial president,Mehboob Beig,on the Anantnag parliamentary seat. While the party was in favour of giving the mandate to the sitting MP,Abdul Rashid Shaheen,on the Baramulla parliamentary seat,it has formally announced the name of any of the candidates on this seat from Kashmir Valley.

Former Chief Minister and NC President,Farooq Abdullah, said “our candidate Dr Mehboob Beig today filed his nomination for the Anantnag parliamentary seat. On the Srinagar and Baramulla Lok Sabha seats we have not decided the name of any of the candidates. We will come with the names in the next few days.”

With the announcement of candidates by the three major political parties,in Jammu it appears that there will be a direct contest between the BJP nominees for the Udhampur and Jammu Lok Sabha seats and that of the coalition candidates Congress and NC. On three of the seats in Kashmir Valley,it will be mainly a contest between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the NC-Congress alliance candidates.

On the Jammu and Udhampur Lok Sabha seats, coalition has fielded sitting MP’s,Madan Lal Sharma, and Lal Singh against the BJP’s Leela Karan Sharma and Nirmal Singh.

PDP President,Mehbooba Mufti, said “we have yet to decide the name of any of the candidates on the Srinagar parliamentary seat. We are discussing that whether the candidate for the parliamentary seat will be from Budgam or Srinagar.”
