Gujarat land row: Protesting AAP supporters demanding CM’s resignation detained by police

In a statement, AAP state convener Kanubhai Kalsaria, said that detaining the agitating party workers amounted to "curbing democratic rights of the people''.

More than five dozen Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers protesting against Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel were detained by the police on Saturday.

The AAP workers were protesting at RTO Circle in Ahmedabad demanding the resignation of the chief minister for her alleged role in the Gujarat land allotment row.

In 2010, Gujarat government is believed to have allotted 250 acres of land next to Gir Lion Sanctuary to Wildwoods Resorts and Realties Pvt Ltd (WWRRPL) for setting up a resort which was allotted at a price of Rs 15 per square metre or Rs 60,000 per acre. It has been said that the alleged company was favoured as it has close association with Patel’s daughter, Anar Patel.The row leads back to Narendra Modi’s tenure as a chief minister of the state, when Anandiben Patel was the Revenue minister in his cabinet.

In a statement, AAP state convener Kanubhai Kalsaria, said that detaining the agitating party workers amounted to “curbing democratic rights of the people”.

AAP media coordinator Harshal Nayak said: “Our demonstration was completely peaceful. Yet, the police detained our workers and leaders”.

He further said that demonstration were also organised in Rajkot, Vadodara, Surat, Dahod, mangrol, Savarkundla, Deesa and Junagadh.
