Haryana Assembly Election Result Live: A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retained power for the third time in Haryana Assembly elections, all three Independent MLAs — Savitri Jindal, Devender Kadyan, and Rajesh Joon — on Wednesday decided to back the BJP government once it is sworn in. While Kadyan fought from the Ganaur constituency in Sonipat and defeated his nearest Congress rival Kuldeep Sharma, Joon won from the Bahadurgarh seat in the Jhajjar district, defeating his nearest BJP rival Dinesh Kaushik. On the other hand, Savitri Jindal won as an Independent candidate in Hisar, defeating Congress’s Ram Niwas Rara.

The ruling BJP secured a historic third term in Haryana, winning 48 Assembly seats. The Congress, meanwhile, won 37 seats, Independents stood at 3 and the INLD won 2 seats. However, soon after the results were declared, the Congress party said it cannot accept the verdict in Haryana as there were “serious issues” about the integrity of the counting process and functioning of the EVMs in some districts, and asserted that it would take up the matter with the Election Commission.

Haryana election results 2024 live: 5 things that made Nayab Singh Saini a winner for BJP

Haryana Election result, BJP winning factor: Everyone was surprised when the Bharatiya Janata Party replaced then-chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar with Nayab Singh Saini in March this year. While Khattar’s removal was not all too out of the blue, the choice of the Kurukshetra MP as the Haryana chief minister was pretty unexpected.

But any reservations that political observers may have had about Saini disappeared on Tuesday, as he steered the BJP to a historic third term in Haryana with its best-ever seat tally. Here are 5 things that made Nayab Singh Saini a winner.

Haryana election results 2024 live: Rahul Gandhi finally speaks up on results, but just, even as calls grow for accountability

After a conspicuous silence all through Tuesday as the Congress hopes were snuffed in Haryana and the party sunk to a new low in Jammu and Kashmir, Rahul Gandhi put out a post on social media on the Assembly election results Wednesday.

While he promised to analyse the reasons for the Congress’s shock defeat in Haryana, he made no mention of the party’s performance in J&K, apart from thanking the people of the Union Territory for rewarding “INDIA” and the “Constitution."

Gandhi also seemed to back the decision by the party to approach the Election Commission, mentioning “complaints coming from many Assembly constituencies” in Haryana.

Caste to Constitution, INDIA to J-K: The takeaways from PM Modi’s victory speech

Pushed on the backfoot by the Congress on the issue of caste, with its demand for a caste census and its campaign that a strong BJP government would tinker with reservations, the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to come roaring back after the Haryana results.

In Modi’s speech to party workers after the BJP’s record-making win in Haryana, and its strong showing in Jammu and Kashmir, this was the main takeaway. Another big one was the PM’s remark that while the BJP has often been re-elected in states, the Congress has not been able to come back to power in any state after Assam 13 years ago.

Haryana election results 2024 live: Why JMM, Congress are taking heart from Haryana poll results

While the BJP feels emboldened following a historic third term in Haryana, leaders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress in Jharkhand, which goes to polls next along with Maharashtra, said the “encouraging pro-incumbency” signs had heartened them.

At the same time, the leaders of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand admitted that the “rhetoric of tribal politics” alone would not lead them to a decisive victory like in 2014 when the alliance won 26 of the 28 seats reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (STs).

“The pro-incumbency result in Haryana also reflects the governance model so we will have to show what we have done for the people,” said a government insider.

Haryana BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli Wednesday said Kadyan and Joon have decided to extend their support to the BJP government once it is sworn in.

Since 2014 in Haryana, move towards bipolar, tighter BJP-Cong contests

As the BJP on Tuesday won a historic third consecutive term in Haryana, data from Lok Sabha and Assembly polls showed that electoral contests in the state have become increasingly bipolar over the last decade. The data also reveal that the gap between the BJP and Congress, the top two parties in the state, has narrowed in the same period, as the regional parties have been increasingly squeezed out.

In 2014, the BJP won seven out of Haryana’s 10 Lok Sabha seats en route to power at the Centre. While the Congress won just one seat, the O P Chautala-led Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won two. The BJP led with a 34.8% vote share, followed by the INLD at 24.4% and the Congress at 23%.

Months later, the BJP won the Haryana Assembly elections, getting a majority with 47 seats and a 33.3% vote share, ending the Congress’s 10-year rule in the state. The Congress won just 15 Assembly seats and a 20.7% vote share, while the INLD won 19 seats and a 24.2% vote share.

Haryana election results 2024 live: Mayawati blames Jats’ ‘casteist mentality’ and support for Congress for BSP defeat in Haryana

A day after the Haryana Assembly poll results came, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati blamed the “casteist mentality” of the Jat community and its consolidated support for the Congress for her party’s defeat in the elections, which it contested in alliance with the Indian National Lok Dal.

The INLD won two seats, Dabwali and Rania, and got a 4.14 per cent vote share while the BSP got only a 1.82 per cent vote share and no seat.

Addressing reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday, Mayawati said the Jat community in Haryana was upset with the BJP for the anti-farmer policies of its government in the state and at the Centre.

Anti-Jat consolidation, aggressive campaign, ticket strategy: how BJP bounced back in Haryana

With a historic third win in Haryana, the BJP has got just the boost it needed after finishing short of a majority in the Lok Sabha polls – and ahead of the coming Assembly elections.

Facing huge anti-incumbency in Haryana, farmer and wrestler anger over long-lasting protests and discontent over the Agniveer scheme, the BJP spread out its bets in the state.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched in with big rallies, though he addressed just four against 10 in 2019, there was equal emphasis on local leaders and the consolidation of anti-Jat votes.

Dushyant Chautala’s JJP hits rock bottom: From kingmaker in 2019 to zero seats in 2024

After winning 10 seats in 2019 and becoming a kingmaker, former Haryana deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) hit rock bottom this time, with Tuesday’s results showing that it failed to win a single seat in the state.

A pre-poll alliance between the JJP and the Chandersekhar Azad-led Azad Samaj Party (ASP-Kanshi Ram) had announced candidates in all of Haryana’s 90 Assembly seats. However, eventually, the JJP ended up contesting 66 seats and the ASP 12.

All these candidates, except Digvijay Chautala who contested from Dabwali, lost their security deposits.

Haryana election results 2024: Did Dalit concern about ‘Jatshahi’, ‘kharchi-parchi’ damage Congress in Haryana?

“There was a total monopoly of one family on the Congress in Haryana,” said Kumari Selja as the unexpected results in the state took many, including the Congress, by surprise, paving the way for the BJP to form a government for an unprecedented third time.

Selja, the former Union Minister and current Sirsa MP, did not name either Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda or his son Deepender, the Rohtak MP. But it was clear whom she was referring to. “That is why we have reached this stage,” she said.

“The people wanted the Congress this time. But the Congress became symbolised by only one family and this has been going on for the last 25 years and now there was a huge backlash.”

Haryana Assembly Election Results 2024: As JJP falters, BJP, Congress increase SC seat tally

The BJP and Congress increased their tally across 17 Assembly constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Haryana, with the Jannayak Janta Party led by Dushyant Chautala failing to open its account.

The BJP won eight of 17 reserved constituencies, up from five in 2019, while Congress increased its tally to nine from 2019’s seven. The JJP that won four of the reserved seats in 2019 and played the role of kingmaker ended with zero this time.

Of the eight reserved seats it won, the BJP saw a decline in its margin in four seats — Narwana, Bawal, Israna, Hodal. It also saw an increase in an equal number of constituencies — Kharkhauda, Pataudi, Bawani Khera and Nilokheri.

Haryana election results live 2024: Saini meets PM Modi day after BJP's victory in Haryana

A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retained power for the third time in Haryana Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Wednesday, news agency PTI reported.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Saini credited PM Modi's policies for the party's success. He said psephologists might have declared the Congress as the favourite to win the polls but he always insisted that people will put their trust in the BJP due to its government's policies, PTI report stated.

To a question about Congress raising doubts on EVMs, he said the opposition party has been building up a storm of lies.

He said, "The credit of this big win goes to Modi who brought such schemes in last 10 years that benefitted the poor, farmers, youth and women. These helped all sections of the society. People love him, and hence the BJP is coming to power for a third time." (PTI)

Haryana election results live 2024: Leg-up for BJP ahead of Maharashtra, Jharkhand, task cut out for Congress

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created history in Haryana registering a resounding victory that would give it a third term in power there.

It also improved its tally in Jammu and Kashmir and, more importantly, its government at the Centre claimed credit for ensuring that elections were held and that an elected UT Assembly was in place – its powers severely limited – for the first time since the state was split and its special status abrogated.

The verdict holds multiple messages.

Former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who was one of the party’s election incharges in the state and had been working in Haryana over the past two years, speaks to The Indian Express about the BJP’s historic performance and the strategy behind it, among other issues.

What made it possible for the BJP to win Haryana?

Firstly, we succeeded in convincing people that the Opposition’s misleading campaign which claimed the BJP would do away with reservation for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) was a lie.

The Congress’s SC face and state chief Udai Bhan lost from Hodal while our candidates Bimla Chaudhary and former Rajya Sabha MP Krishan Lal Panwar won from Pataudi and Israna (both SC-reserved seats).
