Pointing out that Goa was the first state to follow a uniform civil code, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said that despite having a significant minority population, there had been no problems or complaints regarding the UCC in Goa.

“I am proud that in Goa, UCC has been followed since the time of liberation…Minorities comprise more than 27 per cent of the population in Goa, and in the last 60 years, there has not been any problem or complaint. No one has faced any problem here or raised an issue on this,” Sawant told the media.

“I am grateful to the Prime Minister for explaining the need for a uniform civil code and how it is important for gender equality. If the Central government wants to bring this Bill, I welcome it…It should be implemented across the country as soon as possible,” he said.

Stressing that the UCC was important for women’s empowerment, Sawant criticised Opposition parties, saying they were politicising the issue.

“Many political parties…especially the Congress and the Samajwadi Party…are doing politics on this [issue]. I think the parties that are doing politics…do not want gender equality and women’s empowerment,” he said.

“It is important to understand the UCC first. The UCC is not based on any caste or religion…Under the UCC, after marriage, property rights are shared equally between a husband and a wife. Hence…some political parties find it appropriate to do politics on this,” he added.
