The Opposition parties on Sunday slammed the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government’s order banning sale of meat in the 500-metre radius of temples during Navratri as “double standards of double-engine government” and an attempt to divert people’s attention from fundamental issues.

Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who was in Lucknow, said the state government should also order closure of liquor shops and restaurants serving meat and liquor across the state for nine days.

Alleging “double standards of the double-engine government”, Singh said while on the one hand the Centre is distributing “Saugat-e-Modi” and party leaders are attending Iftar parties, the BJP government in UP is not allowing offering of namaz.

Pointing to reports of “one plus one” offer on the sale of liquor in the state and alleging it to be part of a “big scam”, Sanjay Singh said, “There is a bumper BJP offer in the state, which is offering one bottle of liquor free with the purchase of one. It is the double daru offer of the double-engine government, which has failed to give employment to the youth. Long queues are seen at liquor shops in Muzaffarnagar, Noida and Hapur.”

“If your intentions are right then you should have put a ban on sale of liquor for nine days across UP like you did with meat shops. You should also close big restaurants serving meat,” Singh said.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also targeted the government on the meat ban order, saying such issues are being raised to shift focus from fundamental issues like employment and inflation.

“The fact remains that no one can become a ‘yogi’ by just wearing certain clothes. One becomes a ‘yogi’ with their ‘thoughts and work’. In our country festivals are celebrated with unity. The chief minister has not read Vivekananada’s idea of religion in our country which teaches universal acceptance and tolerance,” he said.
