Red alert in seven districts as Andhra Pradesh braces for Cyclone Montha

The storm, brewing over the southeast Bay of Bengal, is forecast to intensify and cross between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on October 28.

Ahead of ‘severe’ Cyclone Montha’s landfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Monday across seven districts in coastal Andhra Pradesh, namely, Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nellore. The state government has declared holidays for educational institutions till Wednesday. All fishing and related activities have been temporarily suspended, and beach tourism has been closed.

Thousands of people in low-lying areas have been moved to temporary relief camps. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are on alert and ready to be deployed at short notice. Rescue and relief teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Indian Coast Guard, along with their ships and aircraft, have also been placed on standby.

Earlier on Sunday, CM Chandrababu Naidu said the official machinery from the village level to the state level have been alerted and the state has prepared its ministers, collectors, SPs and all the high officials to work in coordination with all the departments. “We are taking steps to prevent loss of life and property by sending information related to the intensity of rain and the impact of the cyclone directly to the people,” he said.

In light of the Cyclone Montha approaching Andhra Pradesh, the official machinery from the village level to the state level have been alerted, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said.

"We have prepared ministers, collectors, SPs and all the high officials to work in coordination with all the departments. We have made the necessary funds available to the districts... and appointed special officers. I have instructed the officials to ensure that there is no disruption to electricity, drinking water and transport services," he said.

"We are taking steps to prevent loss of life and property by sending information related to the intensity of rain and the impact of the cyclone directly to the people," he added.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system was located near latitude 16.0°N and longitude 66.5°E, approximately 760 km west-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra), 790 km west of Panjim (Goa), 870 km northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), and 970 km west-northwest of Mangalore (Karnataka).

The IMD has forecast that the system is likely to continue moving southwestwards initially and then south-southwestwards across the eastcentral Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours.

The deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards at a speed of about 6 kmph during the past six hours and was centred at 0830 hrs IST on October 26, 2025, over the same region. It was located near latitude 11.2°N and longitude 87.1°E, approximately 620 km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 780 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 830 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 830 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), and 930 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha).

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to continue moving west-northwestwards and further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

Thereafter, it is likely to track northwestwards and then north-northwestwards, strengthening into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28. Continuing on this path, the system is very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

Cyclone Montha LIVE News Updates: Deep depression in Bay of Bengal, Odisha govt put all districts on alert

The depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression on Sunday and is gradually moving toward the east coast, prompting the Odisha government to put all 30 districts on high alert, officials said.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, on the evening or night of October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained winds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

Odisha is likely to experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29, the IMD added. Red, orange, and yellow alerts have been issued for several southern and coastal districts, where isolated areas could receive rainfall exceeding 20 cm.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a 'cyclonic storm' over the southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, a bulletin by the Centre said.

The system is further expected to intensify into a 'severe' cyclonic storm by October 28 and very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada on October 28, it said.

"The depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal moved nearly west-north westwards with a speed of 10 km per hour, intensified into a Deep Depression today, October 26, and lay centered about 610 km west of Port Blair, 790 km east-south east of Chennai, 850 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 840 km south east of Kakinada and 950 km south east of Gopalpur (Odisha)" the bulletin said.

Cyclone Montha LIVE News Updates: Andhra govt prepares action plan for relief, essential supplies

The Andhra Pradesh government has drawn up a comprehensive action plan to ensure relief measures and uninterrupted essential supplies as part of its preparedness for Cyclone Montha, officials said on Saturday.

State Civil Supplies Minister N. Manohar stated that the plan outlines key areas such as the positioning of Public Distribution System (PDS) stocks, fuel inventory management, paddy procurement, food supply to relief shelters, and post-cyclone relief distribution.

“The government has prepared an action taken report detailing all pre-cyclone preparedness steps for Cyclone Montha to ensure full readiness before landfall,” Manohar said in an official statement.

According to him, the supply of food grains to all fair price shops in the coastal areas will be completed by October 26, with adequate stocks already placed at Mandal Level Stock Points (MLSPs). Officials reported that 40% of stock movement in coastal districts has been completed, and GPS exemptions were approved for second-stage grain transport based on district collectors’ requests.

Andhra Pradesh is bracing for the severe Cyclone Montha, which is heading towards the state and will start affecting normal life from October 26, with heavy rains predicted in many parts, officials said. The IMD has warned the Rayalaseema region will receive extreme heavy rainfall (over 210mm in 24 hours) on October 27 and 28. Cyclone Montha was named by Thailand.

State CM N Chandrababu Naidu Saturday told officials to remain alert, directing them to ensure no hurdles in essential services, especially when the cyclone makes landfall. The CM conducted a teleconference with district collectors and SPs Saturday in view of the cyclone becoming more severe. He asked officials to remain alert with the IMD having issued a red alert in view of the cyclone being predicted to cross the coast near Kakinada on October 28, resulting in strong winds with a speed of 90-110 km. The CM said holidays should be declared for educational institutions if necessary, and that information should be passed on to the ground in real time.
