What we know about the surge in cases: The current surge of Covid cases in India is driven by new Omicron sub-variants such as JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC. These are known to have shown increased transmissibility but mostly mild symptoms. The WHO currently classifies these as “Variants Under Monitoring” — not of concern yet, but requiring caution. Meanwhile, SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, has not disappeared, but it no longer behaves like an unpredictable emergency — rather, it has become part of a recurring cycle of illnesses, similar to the flu.
Karnataka added two more Covid-related deaths to its tally, pushing it to 11 on Monday. The day also saw 67 new cases, according to the health department.
A 51-year-old woman from Belagavi with comorbidities had died of acute cardiorespiratory arrest on June 8. While 79-year-old man from Dakshina Kannada, who was admitted on June 6 at a private hospital in Dakshina Kannada, died of Covid pneumonia on June 9. Maharashtra reported 89 new Covid-19 cases and one death on Tuesday, taking the state's tally of infection since January 1 this year to 1,593, the state public health department said.
Of the latest cases, 32 were recorded in Mumbai, 23 in Pune, nine in Pimpri Chinchwad, four each in Kalyan and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, three each in Thane, Nagpur and Satara, two in Chandrapur, and one each in Raigad, Gondia, Mira Bhayandar and Navi Mumbai.
The number of Covid-19 tests carried out in Maharashtra since January 1 was 18,103, the health department said.--PTI

A 44-yea-old male who passed away suffered from aspirational pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, hypertension and hypothyroidism.
Kerala
The patient who passed away was a 79 years old male with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, Coronary artery disease, Chronic Kidney Disease. He also had a hemiarthroplasty recently due to a femur fracture. The patient suffered from heart failure, stroke. As per the ministry the causes of death were Covid-19 pneumonia, Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and Sepsis.
West Bengal reported no new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, as per the data on the website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday.
Currently, there are 747 active cases of Covid-19 in the state.
Manipur reported the first case of Covid-19 this year on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Health and family Welfare website.
