The Supreme Court on Monday transferred all three FIRs lodged against Congress leader Pawan Khera in Uttar Pradesh and Assam to Lucknow and extended his interim bail till April 10 in a case related to his alleged objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The SC bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and K B Pardiwala, also directed the Congress leader to appear before a Lucknow court to seek regular bail.
Khera was arrested by the Assam Police at Delhi airport on February 23 in connection with his alleged remarks against Modi, made at a press conference in Mumbai on February 17. The Congress leader, while demanding an investigation by a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) against the Gautam Adani Group, had referred to the Prime Minister as “Narendra Gautamdas Modi.”
The PM’s full name is Narendra Damodardas Modi, wherein the middle name is his father’s. On February 17, Khera tweeted, “I genuinely got confused whether it is Damodardas or Gautam Das…”
The apex court has been extending his bail from time to time, post the incident. Out of the three FIRs, two were lodged at the Cantonment police station in Varanasi and the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow. The third FIR was lodged in Assam.
