Unnao rape survivor’s aunt cremated, CBI books BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar

A special team formed by the CBI to probe the case reached the accident site in the Gurubakshganj area of Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district. “The CBI has constituted a team for speedy and smooth investigation of the case,” the agency’s spokesperson said here. The team inspected the crime scene, the truck which had hit the white Maruti Swift car.

The CBI was handed over the case Tuesday after the Yogi Adiyanath-led UP government received flak for failing to provide security to the woman. The agency officials may visit the accident site and take details from officials of Gurubakshganj Police Station in Rae Bareli where the accident happened.

The woman’s father had died in judicial custody in 2018. A few days before Sunday’s accident, the woman and two of her relatives had written to the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi claiming a threat to their lives. The Supreme Court has sought a report from its secretary-general as to why her letter to CJI was not placed before it.

On Monday, the UP Police had filed a murder case against Sengar and nine others after the rape survivor’s family filed a complaint, alleging a “conspiracy” behind the accident.

The Unnao rape victim’s aunt, who was killed in the collision, was cremated on the banks of the Ganges amid tight security. The rape victim’s uncle Mahesh Singh, who was granted short-term bail to attend the last rites of his wife, was brought to the Ganga ghat from the Rae Bareli district jail to attend the ritual.

Earlier in the day, the body of 45-year-old Pushpa (45) was brought from the Lucknow hospital to her native house in Makhi village to the wailing cries of close relatives. The house, which is just 100 metres from the house of Sengar, was surrounded by a large number of police and PAC personnel.
