Nursing Admissions

Before we delve into colleges and courses, it’s important to know how nursing admissions are conducted in India. Is it based on Class 12 scores, or is a separate entrance exam conducted?

BSc Nursing admissions are determined through a combination of merit and entrance exam performance. To be eligible for admission into a BSc Nursing programme, candidates must have completed Class 12 with at least 55 per cent aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology from a recognised board.

While many institutions primarily base admissions on Class 12 scores, several also consider entrance exam results as part of their selection criteria. Some of the widely accepted entrance exams for BSc Nursing admission include KCET, AP EAMCET, JENPAS UG, TS EAMCET, NEET, and CUET, among others. Although NEET is not mandatory for admissions to BSc nursing; however, certain colleges consider the scores for shortlisting candidates.

AIIMS Delhi

BSc Nursing is a 4-year undergraduate programme in AIIMS, Delhi, with 77 seats. The number of seats can vary as the official website of AIIMS’s College of Nursing was last updated on September 21, 2015. For admission, students have to appear for NEET. Other than BSc, there are a few more courses in nursing by AIIMS, like BSc (Post-Basic) Nursing, MSc Nursing, which includes various branches like Pediatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Cardiological/CTVS Nursing, Neurological Nursing, Oncological Nursing, Critical Care Nursing and Nephrological Nursing.

For AIIMS, a BSc nursing student has to give Rs 600 as a tuition fee, Rs 960 as a pot money, Rs 480 as a hostel rent, Rs 100 for caution money and Rs 1000 as a security amount for hostel security, which is refundable.

PGIMER Chandigarh

The Chandigarh-based medical college has two nursing courses at the graduate level, BSc Nursing and BSc Nursing (Post Basic). For BSc Nursing, a student should have completed Class 10 and 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English. The age of the student should be between 17-25 years. They also offer an MSc in Nursing with various branches like Medical, Surgical and Community Health Nursing specialities.

There are a few other nursing courses, and the admission for them is conducted once a year. The selection to these courses is based on an entrance examination, which is scheduled in June. Candidates belonging to foreign countries are required to route their applications through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. They have to obtain an eligibility certificate from the Registrar of the PGIMER, Chandigarh, along with a clearance certificate from the Indian Nursing Council and submit it along with the application.

Students who are interested in taking admission will have to pay Rs 1,000 for the tuition fee, Rs 11,300 for the hostel fee and Rs 5,700 one-time payment.

Christian Medical College, Vellore

The College of Nursing at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, was established in 1946. It offers a range of programmes, including BSc Nursing, Post Basic BSc, M.Sc Nursing, and various diploma courses. The departments span specialities such as Community Health, Maternity, Pediatric, Psychiatric, and Medical-Surgical Nursing. The college is affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University and recognised by the Indian Nursing Council. Scholarships are also available for deserving students.

The BSc Nursing fee structure is spread across four years with slight variations each year. The tuition fee remains constant at Rs 810 annually. In the first year, the other annual fee, including the cost of the uniform, is Rs 19,130, which decreases to Rs 8,590 in the second year, Rs 6,740 in the third year, and slightly increases to Rs 8,290 in the fourth year. The university fee is Rs 7,550 in the first year, dropping to Rs 3,000 in the second year, Rs 3,100 in the third year, and Rs 4,000 in the final year. The hostel and mess fee is Rs 31,100 in the first year and Rs 29,900 per year from the second to fourth year.

National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore

The College of Nursing at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, provides undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes with an emphasis on clinical excellence and research. Students receive hands-on training in psychiatric nursing, neurological care, and community mental health. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical exposure in departments such as Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neurosurgery.

The total cost for the full duration of the BSc Nursing program at NIMHANS in 2025 is Rs 1.4 lakh, which includes Rs 20,000 as tuition fees.

Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, offers a comprehensive four-year BSc Nursing programme designed to prepare students for professional nursing careers. The curriculum includes foundational subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Nutrition, and Nursing Foundations in the first year, followed by advanced topics like Medical-Surgical Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, and Midwifery in subsequent years.

A 24-week paid internship in the final year is mandatory for the students. Admission is based on NEET UG scores, and the programme has an intake of 94 students annually.

For the BSc Nursing and Allied Health Courses, the total annual fee amount was Rs 5,760 in the 2022-23 academic year. This includes a tuition fee of Rs 1,200, the JIPMER Students Association fee of Rs 1,000 per annum, and a learning resource fee of Rs 2,000. Additionally, a corpus fund fee of Rs 60 and a student information system fee of Rs 1,500 per annum are charged, bringing the overall cost to the stated total.
