Delhi University’s ad-hoc teachers submitted a memorandum signed by hundreds of fellow teachers to the President, the visitor of the university, and appealed that they be regularised.
While the university does not have a record of how many ad-hoc teachers it employs, the number is believed to be around 4,000. There are a total of around 9,000 teachers at DU.The appeal also asked the President to look into the alleged discriminatory and exploitative service conditions and the way it affects the teaching-learning environment of the university.
“As per UGC and DU’s guidelines, ad-hoc appointments should be made for a short period of not more than four months and proportion of these faculties should not be more than 10 per cent of the total number of faculties. But DU has developed a culture of appointing ad-hoc faculties even on permanent sanctioned posts for years. The situation is so critical that in some colleges, the proportion of ad-hoc faculties has reached 90 per cent,” states the memorandum.
