A gang of six persons has been arrested for allegedly duping students on the pretext of getting them admitted into different national and international universities through their fake consultancy, said the Noida Police on Monday.

Police have also seized 61 post-dated cheques amounting to lakhs, two laptops, 16 cellphones, a diary, and other documents.

Manish Kumar Mishra, additional DCP (Noida), told The Indian Express: “We think they have duped around 150 to 200 students so far, but it could be more. Further probe is underway.”

In an official statement, police said that they arrested the accused — Rahul Kumar and Anupam Kumar — during a routine check at NFG Road in Noida Sector 77, and the other four accused from several other places in Noida sectors 58 and 62.

Police claimed that both Rahul and Anupam operated two offices — one in Noida and another in Pune; they also ran several networking sites registered as ‘Next Education’, ‘Edupro’, ‘Career Corner’, ‘Career Plan’, ‘Admission Sathi’ and several others through which they would contact students seeking admission into universities. After obtaining details of the students, the accused would offer them MBBS, BAMS, BDS, MDMS, BTech and several other courses in universities such as N L Dalmia Institute of Management Studies and Research, Vellore Institute of Technology, NWAC, and IMT among others for hefty amounts — as fees and donation.

An FIR has been registered against the accused under Indian Penal Code sections 406 (breach of trust), 420 (cheating), and 467, 468, 471 and 414 for forging and possessing forged documents, as well as relevant sections of the IT Act.
