A National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut student, who had staged a protest at the campus last month on the day of the Ayodhya Ram Temple consecration, has been suspended. The suspension has, however, been put on hold until authorities take a decision on his appeal against the action.
Vysakh Premkumar is a fourth-year engineering student, and his suspension has triggered unrest in the campus, with several students’ organisations holding protests.
On January 22, a group of students under the banner of a science and spirituality club had drawn a saffron-coloured map of India at the gate of the institute. A section of students, led by Premkumar, protested against it. He also raised a placard saying India is not a Ram Rajya, after which a scuffle took place between the students.
On January 31, the institute’s Dean of Students’ Welfare placed Premkumar under suspension for a year, holding him “accountable for inciting unrest and for lowering the esteem of the institute”.
However, student organisations, including CPI(M)’s SFI and Congress’s KSU on Thursday took up protest marches to the institute, demanding withdrawal of the suspension. As tension mounted, the institute decided to put on hold the suspension until his appeal against the disciplinary action is heard.
