In Himachal, Shah says Congress tries to divide, BJP works for development

Saying that the Modi government made possible what had previously seemed impossible, Shah highlighted the 2019 decision by the Centre to revoke the special status accorded to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution, and the ongoing construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Targeting the Opposition and hailing work done by the BJP government at the Centre, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said at an election rally in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur on Saturday that while the Congress party “tried to divide people”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi “works only for development”. Himachal Pradesh goes to the polls on November 12.

“The Congress party tried to divide people, while Modi works only for development. The state has completed 50 years, and the long-standing trend of alternate parties winning [Assembly elections] has to change. There is always a first time of changing the trend. You must write on the walls, ‘ek baar Bhajpa, baar baar Bhajpa (vote for BJP once, vote for BJP many times)’,” said Shah.

“No one believed that section 370 could be removed. Congress would run away from this question. In 2019, Modi threw out the section, and today Kashmir is the crown jewel of the country. It was the will shown by the government to do something considered impossible,” he said.

On the construction of Ram temple, Shah said, “Congress used to taunt us and say ‘Mandir vahi banayenge, tithi nahi batayenge’. PM Modi started the construction of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya”.

Shah also lauded the Prime Minister for granting tribal status to the Hatti community.

The Hattis from the Trans-Giri region (nestled between the Giri and Tons rivers) of Himachal Pradesh have been seeking reservation since 1967.

“The Hatti community has been through a lot of pain. The government has ended a 55-year ordeal of the community. PM Modi understands your pain because he has worked in the state’s organisation. He has a sense of belonging to the state and he will always work for the state,” Shah said.

Himachal Pradesh CM Jai Ram Thakur “is the kind of Chief Minister who will get after you to get work done. He told me so many times about this issue (tribal status for the Hatti community)… He said that granting the status was a difficult job, but we made it possible,” the Home Minister said.

The Hatti community will now get the benefit of reservation, he said, while accusing the Congress of instigating the Dalit community that their rights of reservation would be depleted after providing tribal status to the Hatti community.

Shah said he wanted to make it clear that Dalits of the area would keep on getting as much reservation as they were getting earlier. “It’s time for the people of Himachal Pradesh to change the trend of voting parties to power alternately in every elections as the people of Uttarakhand had recently done,” he said.

He promised that the central and state governments would work together to bring development to Himachal Pradesh.

“We are not going to leave any stone unturned for the development of the state. On the one hand, there is the Modi government, on the other hand, there is the Jai Ram government. This will ensure that the state is not ignored,” Shah said.

He also talked about the need to get rid of what he described as legacy politics.

“The country should get rid of legacy politics. The Congress party is riddled with family politics. It was Prime Minister Modi who rooted out family politics,” he said.

The days of king and queen are gone and Prime Minister Modi changed the name of Rajpath in Delhi to Kartavya Path and installed a grand statue of Subhas Chandra Bose there, Shah said.

He also reminded the gathering about the surgical strike carried out by the armed forces in response to terrorist attack. Shah said the Modi government has brought the Indian economy to the fifth position in the world from number 11 in just eight years.

Earlier, Shah launched the BJP’s election theme song, “Himachal ki Pukar, Phir Bajpa Sarkar”.
