Two days after a 19-year-old son of a timber businessman was found dead on the outskirts of Adipur town in Gujarat’s Kutch, the police said on Monday they are working on multiple theories but are yet to crack the case.

Sagar Bagmar, Superintendent of Police, Kutch (East), told The Indian Express, “We are investigating the case from multiple angles, including the angle of kidnapping for ransom. We are also investigating if there was any love affair at play”.

Bagmar said they are also analysing CCTV footage showing a man wearing a white hooded T-shirt and riding pillion on Yash Tomar’s scooter on November 6.

Tomar had left home in Meghpar Borichi near Anjar at 10 am on November 6 to attend classes at his college in nearby Adipur town. At around 11.20 am, a short video clip was shared from his mobile phone on the Share-Chat app, showing a thicket of gando bavala (Prosopis juliflora) captioned “phans gaya (I am trapped)”.

Tomar, whose father is from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, didn’t return home until 5 pm that day as per his schedule. His mother told the Anjar police she received a call later in the evening from a caller who told her that Tomar had been kidnapped.

The caller also demanded Rs 1.25 crore must be delivered to him in Mumbai on November 11 else her son would be killed. However, the caller’s number later became unreachable.

In the meantime, the police managed to identify the place shown in the ShareChat video as a thicket behind Panchmukhi Hanuman in Adipur. They also found one of Tomar’s shoes in the thicket on Friday evening.

On Saturday, police excavated a trench which seemed to have been dug recently and refilled and discovered Tomar’s decomposed body in it. The body was sent to Jamnagar for forensic post-mortem and the family performed the boy’s last rites in the city on Sunday.
